Update notes: finished adding all the bridges, added a link to photos. I will try to format everything to be a bit nicer and/or make a copy at another location that allows for easienicer formatting. As requested by raleighspritely in the other bridges thread, this post is intended to help generally newer riders figure out specifically how to get onto each bridge in each direction, where all most of the exit options go and any other weirdnesses each bridge may have. I'll assume you know roughly where you are and roughly how to get to each bridge. Some are easy to find the entrances for (Burrard), some are weird (Cambie, southbound) and some have entrances a long way from where the cars access (Golden Ears) so if they're super weird I'll try and give you more specifics. Granville - follow the instructions for Burrard or Cambie If you insist on using the GSB (don't) SB access is easiest via Howe St and NB access at 5th & Granville Burrard Easiest to get onto IMO as the access is right at the ends of the bridge
South Bound: connection is at Pacific & Burrard, SW corner. From Beach Ave your options are up Thurlow from the east end of Sunset Beach or just along Pacific from the west end of Sunset beach
as you get to the south end of the bridge @ Cornwall you can:
go right to Cornwall & Cypress
go straight, across Cornwall
then right onto Yew
more straight to Burrard & First where you can go up Burrard St
left @ Burrard & First towards Granville Island
North Bound: connection is at Cornwall & Burrard. You can also hop on the bike lane easily at 1st & Burrard
as you get to the north end you can:
right to Hornby & Pacific
across Pacific then left onto Pacific towards English Bay
straight & up the hill along Burrard to Drake, Burnaby St, Davie St
Cambie Going southbound on Cambie is super weird to get to unless you're already on Nelson St
South Bound: access is on Nelson St @ Cambie St which downtown is running almost perpendicular to the bridge. If you're coming from the northeast you can connect via Beatty
the main exit will take you to Olympic Village Station
If you cut off early (through the flexibarriers) you can pop up Cambie to go left/right on 7th
If you stay till the station you can hang a hard left at 2nd to cut under the bridge and go to Olympic Village
or cross 2nd and take Heather St south
or continue along 2nd briefly to find yourself on Seaside Bypas
North Bound: access is at Cambie & 2nd by the VPD headquarters on 5th. It's that weird intersection of numbered streets you thought were parallel but also manage to intersect
veer left takes you onto what is technically a pedestrian only way that connects to Pacific Blvd EB, yield to pedestrians.
right takes you onto a hairpin
first right connects you to Cooperage Way/Marinaside and basically the Seawall
second right will take you up a short ramp and connect to the Smithe St bike "lane" which can be used to connect to Pacific WB, Richards or all the way up the hill past Burrard & Smithe
Lion's Gate North Bound:
climb the Causeway through Stanley Park, it's not too bad especially with the "new" fence
do a 1/2 Stanley Park loop and as you go around the right turn at what you'll think is the top of the hill you'll see a road to the left with a gate, take that and turn right when you hit the causeway
watch for the little chicane just before the bridge
descent down the north side of bridge can be a bit rough & bumpy
when you get to the north end stay right and go down the little road
if you go HARD right when it levels out you can connect to
the Spirit Trail east bound
Taylor Way which will take you to Parkgate, hang a left at the mall and you can connect to the trail over to Ambleside
if you go roughly straightl/left it'll connect onto Marine and along to Capilano
South Bound:
once you're back directly under the bridge, there's a ramp up the west side of the bridge going north, take that, it'll open up and hang a hard right to turn to face south
on exit at the pumphouse(?) you can
continue south
you'll come across a road to the right, taking it will get you to Park Dr just before Prospect Point
continuing straight takes you along the Causeway and connects onto Georgia ST
hang a 180deg right, then you can either:
cut under the bridge to go back north
go left up a fairly steep, narrow paved path to Prospect Pt
Second Narrows/IronworkersThis is one of the weirdest/awkwardest, particularly at the north end North Bound:
access is at Cambridge & Cassiar. You can connect up via Cassiar from Adanac or Bridgeway St & a small path if you're coming from Portside
as you turn right off Cassiar onto Cambridge take the small path to the left, follow the path down, along and up and it'll take you straight onto the bridge, yield to oncoming people
alternate access is a path off the left side of Fellowes st. It connects closer to the bridge deck but IMO isn't worth taking
Exits:
as you round the right turn of the ramp you can:
go left at the pedestrian controlled crosswalk and
cross Main to go west to Phibbs, A&W etc
hard left onto the bike path parallel to Main and connect to the WB bike path on Barrow st
go straight and connect to Dollarton, Old Dollarton
left on Old Dollarton then onto Riverside or Seymour River can be used for getting to Seymour Parkway, right goes up to Seymour, left can connect to Cap U
straight on Dollarton can be used for going out to Deep Cove
South Bound Access is here basically across from Phibbs. Many ways to get to it, but you've gotta get to that spot to go south. Exiting: takes you down through the trees, watch for the pair of switchbacks. You'll end up at the bottom of Skeena St.
right takes you onto the Portside bike route
left takes you up Skeena through the tunnel
turn right across the crosswalk as you exit the tunnel takes you onto the path you may have used for getting onto the bridge NB, go left to connect back to Cassiar
continue up the hill gets you to Skeena & Cambridge
it's 6 of One, Half a Dozen of the other if you're going south
Arthur Laing I regard this as an "experts only" type bridge that I wouldn't recommend to anyone not comfortable with riding in fairly close proximity to cars. There's no separated lane and just a narrow shoulder. That said, I don't feel unsafe on this bridge for some reason, but that might just be from riding it a bunch and being used to riding next to cars. Anyways, onto how to get on/off: Southbound: access is via the car ramp at where Marine & Granville all come together in a 6 lane clusterfuck that was meant to be the highway through Vancouver. Normally I access coming off NW Marine, onto the clusterfuck, pick up speed down the hill and (with a lot of shoulder checking) get across the right most lane onto the ramp. Go up the ramp and stick to the right. Exiting: things get dicey/exciting. You'll be crossing roads at speed so be shoulder checking.
Just before the car exit (and right before the overpass) you can dive right onto a pathway
going right, then right again is probably easiest for most connections here
this path can be used to go around McArthurGlen and connect to Grauer Rd and then onto Templeton to Iona
take it to connect to Airport Rd and the bit of mess of trails and eventuall down to Russ Baker Way
1st Car Right: Russ Baker Way, takes you around an off-ramp, will take you SB and connects to No2 Rd
cross Russ Baker exit (watch for cars exiting), keep going along, you can go right on Templeton and go out to Iona Beach
North Bound: you can either access off the paths off Airport Rd here or by riding north along Russ Baker Way and basically sticking right and following the signs to Vancouver. Exiting: again a bit dicey with some potential lane crossing
Sticking right takes you left and onto Marine WB/Granville
If it's not too busy and/or you brought your sprinter legs, you can hammer and cross lanes to go left at the first light and connect onto Marine
If not, carefully get to the right and make your way up to cross at the same light.
crossing over (carefully) to the left ramp will take you right and onto Marine EB. You can take your first right and go down Oak St, left on Kent Ave S and eventually connect to Cambie St. I don't know if I've taken this route more than once or twice so YMMV.
Pitt River This is one of the nicest crossings. All the recently built (or updated) bridges are really, really nice once you're on the deck (Pitt River, Port Mann, Golden Ears + Ironworkers post update). The cycle/pedestrian lane is on the north side of the span and is nice and wide. Access on the west end requires crossing Belfast Ave/Fremont Connector that loops under the bridge. Since access is all for the one side crossing my instructions are written for West->East travel but basically just do them in reverse for East->West. Coming from NW (Trabouley Poco Trail/Deboville Slough), you do a couple zigzags and hairpins and crossing Belfast St but you can see your target the whole time so this bridge is honestly one of the easiest to get onto. Coming from the SW, you go under the bridge parallel to the Fremont Connector then see the access to your left. If you were to keep going on the path instead you'd eventually end up at Deboville Slough. East end of the bridge drops you in Pitt Meadows. As you exit (eastbound) you can immediately do 180deg turn left to get onto the trails. Another left at the river to go south, north and you can make your way out to Pitt Lake on the trails. To access the trail parallel to, and on the south side of, Lougheed Highway take the left at the river then left again at Ferryslip Rd. If you go straight Old Dewdney Trunk Rd is a pretty nice ride towards Maple Ridge. Golden Ears Alright, this one is possibly the most difficult unless you know exactly where to go, partly because they're a long way along the bridge from where cars access. The Southbound Access is at 113B & Airport Way (Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows). The northbound access is at 100A Ave & 201St (Langley) Southbound
You can access the SB access either from Airport Way (coming from the west) or along Maple Meadows Way (coming from the north by Meadowcentre mall). If you're coming from the north or east you go west at the 113B roundabout, cross the road, then left at the second roundabout and hop into the bike lane. If you're coming from the east hang a right at the roundabout and hop into the bike lane.
The SB exit involves a rather fun ramp down and drops you in an industrial area. Unless you're going east, my recommendation is work your way west until you get to 98A & 192, cross to the far side then hop on the GoldenEars Greenway.
Northbound Access is at 100A Ave & 201St. You go up the multilevel round ramp. Your exit will basically be the aforementioned 113B roundabout, you can go straight through it to get onto Maple Meadows Way towards the mall, right will change into 203St as it turns north or go left and west towards the airport. Canada Line Bridge This one is on the side of the Canada Line bridge section between Marine & Cambie Station & Bridgeport Station. North connection is on Kent Ave S @ Cambie. However you have to go east from Kent Ave N & Cambie to turn south to get onto Kent Ave S and access the ramp. If you're coming down Cambie, hang a right on Kent Ave N. South Connection is at River Road and Van Horne Way. If you're going North then east, my recommendation is take Cambie north, then cut east at 59th. Kent Ave N between Cambie and Ontario sucks butt and cars are frequently impatient assholes on that section (it's also rough, needs a repave and has a lot of rail tracks). If you're going north then west you can go west on Kent Ave N and then right on Heather before climbing a bit and taking the westbound route of your choice. If you're just going north then Cambie, Ontario & Heather are all pretty good choices with Ontario & Heather being quieter. I can't remember how all of Heather's crossings are since I haven't ridden it past 59th in years. If you're going South, you can go:
west along River Rd towards the casino & Bridgeport Station
continue SW around the clusterfucks that are Bridgeport Rd, SeaIsland Way and you can return to River Rd and hop onto a gravel trail that you can take pretty much all the way to Steveston
south on Van Horne way to eventually connect onto Garden City Way. This route is about 95% bike lane but theres a one or two spots where taking the sidewalk is unfortunately the prudent choice (I think the south side of Sea Island Way for ~50m) before the bike lane reappears.
east on River Rd towards Shell Rd. If you take Shell Rd far enough south there's a gravel trail that you can use to get to Hammersmith Gate, Horseshoe Way and across to Rice Mill Rd where you can find the Massey Tunnel Shuttle (this is my quiet route to the ferry, my fast route is to hammer south on No5)
Formatting is becoming a pain because this is getting long. Sorry! Port Mann This one is like the Pitt River Bridge in that the pedestrian/bike path is only on the north/east side of the bridge deck. West access is where the Port Mann passes over United Boulevard and where Unite intersects the Mary Hill Bypass offramps. If you're coming off the bridge you can go south/west on United and eventually work your way over towards Braid Station. If you go east on the Mary Hill Bypass you can connect to the Traboulay PoCo trail, Argue St and work your way up to the Pitt River bridge. There's also a mess of trails in and around Colony Farm but you're on your own for that :) East access is a ways up a pretty decent hill at 152st/112Ave by Dogwood Campgrounds. If you're going north/west, the signage is good. Just don't take the overpass over the highway. How you get to 152/112...up to you. It's a big grid! Alex Fraser Ok, this one is another bit of a mess in terms of access. I don't think this one is technically unidirectional like the others, but I recommend riding the same way as cars are travelling and this guide will be based on that. Careful on the deck, there's a bunch of spots where you have to dodge the bases of signs and other spots where the path just shifts left/right. Southbound: You've made it over the Queensborough or come in from Richmond. You've made it onto the Annacis Channel bridge and are approaching Annacis island. You'll see a bus-stop on an island, you want to get there (if not busy, drop the curb & cut across, otherwise there's a crosswalk to use), take the crosswalk that goes parallel to the bus-only section of intersection, onto the sidewalk on the far-far side and then left and you'll see the path onto the bridge. You'll get dropped off with the choice of left or right. Left takes you towards HWY17, River Rd which are the two options for getting to the ferry (take River, it's quieter and only marginally slower). Right will take you under the bridge, and after you go past Planet Ice you can go left towards River Rd east, right-then-right to get onto Nordel north/east or just right for the Delta-South Surrey Greenway. If you're trying to get to South Surrey, go as if you're going up Nordel, get over the overpass, then take the trail that cuts back to the right. This is the North Delta Greenway and is superior to the DSS Greenway in basically every way including being WAY smoother (I ride it on my carbon road bike on 25mm tires). North Bound: Starting from Planet Ice, take the path up onto the bridge, ride across, question why you're out here and didn't just take the Massey Shuttle to get home faster... At the north end of the bridge, you'll end up next to the Annacis exit ramp. At the end of it, you want to take the small crosswalk onto the island with the bus stop, across Cliveden ave onto the island on the far side, then across another little crosswalk onto the path and hang a left. Stick to this path, you'll go back over the Annacis Channel and find yourself at a zig-zagging ramp. At the bottom of that you have the options of:hard right: path through to Hamilton Highway Park where you can take an overpass towards River Rd left then right: onto Boundary Rd then Dyke rd, you can use this to get over towards Westminster Highway via Fraserwood Way. left then left (generally recommended): take Boundary Rd north. At Boundary & Boyd you can go right to the Queensborough or left onto Westminster Hwy which you can use to get all the way to Richmond or to connect to River Rd Queensborough because New West is at a 45deg angle I'll be using "up/down and top/bottom" for this bridge because it's effectively a hill. Top is 22nd St station end, bottom is Queensborough Landing. The top connection is just below 22nd St Station. If you're coming from 22nd St station just take the bridge down, it'll drop you on Boyd St. Left takes you to QB Landing. Right takes you to...not a lot. It's narrow, you'll probably have to slow down a bunch as you pass people. If you're coming from Market Crossing area or New West (both via Marine Dr) I recommend taking the "up" side of the bridge down because it has about 1% of the traffic the "down" side does. To get to it, the access is the ramp on the "cars up" side of the bridge. Otherwise, you can use the ramp on the "cars down" side to connect to the "down" side. Either way as you're going down, watch for the hairpins at the bottom! If you're going up and heading to downtown New West take the "up" side. Head east along Marine/Stewardson. You can eventually head right down a side street to get to S&O because that's why you're in New West right? If not, you're at S&O now. Best way to get through to the rest of downtown is via the Quay. If you're going up and heading to anywhere else take the "down" side and go all the way to 22nd St Station. Right and past the station connects to 7th Ave across New West. Left you can use to get onto both Marine Dr or Marine Way to go west to Market Crossing, Big Bend, Glenlyon, River District. Straight turns into the BC Parkway and travels under the skytrain past Edmonds, Royal Oak, Metrotown stations. Knight St Recommendation: if you can, keep going west and take the Canada Line Bridge. This bridge was NOT intended for cyclists at all as you're about to learn and this section may get a little rant-y. Northbound:
Access is off Bridgeport. Technically you're not supposed to ride on the roadway, but the sign for that is so late onto the bridge you have to know this in advance unless you want to stop and lift your bike over the concrete barrier.
That said, assuming you knew to get onto the sidewalk somewhere at the start of the on-ramp before the barrier begins (it starts at a crosswalk and there's no curb cut), you'll be riding on a pretty narrow sidewalk with barriers both sides. It's rough.
You'll eventually get to an off-ramp, this is Mitchell Island. You'll need to take the crosswalk across to the left. The cut in the barrier is super narrow. Cross the island, drop the curb (again no curb cut) and cross to the next section of sidewalk. Continue north.
Next spot you'll get to gives the option of a crosswalk to the left, riding straight into a post in the middle of the path, or dodging the post and continuing straight/veering right. Go right, this takes you down to Marine Dr.
At Marine you'll find signs pointing to the Kent, Inverness & Borden bike routes
Kent involves following the path to the right and taking your first right
Inverness involves taking the couple crosswalks and getting across Marine, going under the KSB overpass, hop back on the sidewalk after the bridge and follow the signs up to Inverness
Borden I've never done, but I think involves getting across Marine, then taking the sidewalk east to the first street north

A Cliff Notes Summary of the First One Out Interviews
If you haven't had time to listen to seven hours of podcast interviews, or you didn't retain everything you heard, here are some key points. I didn't think to do this until just now, so I'll be posting it as a work in progress and updating it throughout the afternoon. That way more people will have a chance to read up before the premiere. Karishma Patel, 37, Personal Injury Trial Lawyer, Houston, TX -First generation Indian-American Her mom was as a legal assistant, and got her a filing job at her law firm when she was 14. "I didn't have other options. I was basically told I was going to be a lawyer and I didn't disagree."She has watched every season and regularly listens to RHAP. She sits close to the TV to study the inflections on people's faces when something is said to them, so that she can think about what that means. But, her parents and husband don't share her enthusiasm for the show. Asked if it's her dark pleasure she says, "It is completely bright. It is a beautiful pleasure of mine, but it is mine and mine only. I haven't been able to find people to share it with." -Doing the show has caused her conflict. "Not only is it not expected, it's not allowed. It's kind of like being a disobedient Indian girl. You're not supposed to be doing this. What you're supposed to be doing is having babies. But I don't care. I'm a risk taker. I'm here to prove to myself that I don't need to listen to anybody else. I don't need permission from anybody else. This is my journey and I'm going to take it. I hope that people watching out there can see that an Indian woman's value does not come from doing what she's told." -She doesn't currently have children, and she says she has some decisions to make as she enters a crossroads and the next stage of her life. -Her law firm told her they'll replace her if they're able to find someone, and she can have her job back if they don't. "I didn't flinch." -Her strategy is to be non-threatening and play a social game. She doesn't look 37, and she wants to use that youthfulness to be disarming. She wants to build relationships other people believe in. She defines success by other people vouching for her loyalty when they go off and have private conversations with one another. "That means I got 'em, because it's actually the other way around." Asked if she wants to find someone she can trust, "I'm not going to be capable of it. I'm too skeptical for that. I overthink things, so I'm not going to be able to trust somebody the way I want to be trusted... If I do, that's the end of my game." My take: Oh my God. Poor Karishma. Her story hurts my heart. She reminds me so much of myself in her isolation, her defiance and her deep feelings. I worry that her fear of trusting people could get in the way of her forming genuine bonds. But, there's nothing she can do. Society has made her the way she is. I hope she gets a lot of screen time so she can be a star of her favorite show. Missy Byrd, 24, Military Veteran/App Developer, Tacoma, Washington -Originally from Georgia. Her family was 'decently poor.' She played basketball for the Air Force Academy because she thought it was her ticket out. -She had a brain tumor. She stopped menstruating for a year and two quarters. "I'm not dating anyone but I have breast milk. I'm a literal cow... I would look down and my shirt would be wet, and I thought, 'Dang you're clumsy. I knew you were clumsy, but you're clumsier today than you were yesterday. But it was - it was - uhh - milk." She had crying fits. She developed a stutter and couldn't look at people. Doctors told her she was just stressed. When her dad died she couldn't process emotions normally. She was about to go to the French version of the Air Force Academy, École de l'air, after graduation but because of her mental instability she was removed from school. The military shipped her to the same Air Force base as Sandra (Fort Lewis.) "I don't want to be there. Super sad. Check into the post office - fuck this. Check into the dorms - hate that." The doctor there found the tumor. She got an MRI and all weekend she believed she might have cancer. Over the next year and a half she eliminated the tumor and the symptoms using vitamins. She enlisted and worked logistics. -She made a list of the things she wanted to do now that she was going to live. "The first thing was go see Beyonce. Beyonce costs way too much money for a normal person to go see, but if you've just almost had a near death experience you go see Beyonce, bro!" She was feet away. She drove across the country. She tried weed. -She had an idea for an app, but didn't even have the computer literacy to use social media. She found a veteran's association and asked if she could intern. "They said, 'No, you should build this out yourself. We want to work for you.' I said, 'No, the fuck you don't. Okay, lemme call my grandma.'" She wrote a grant proposal and won a $1,500 office space in the center of Seattle. "Just to do whatever I want. It was like a laboratory for a child. I had Play-Dough up there. I had a white board... Just mind blowing shit when I could have been dead." -She'd seen every episode of Survivor at least three times. She started watching because her Air Force Academy basketball team was getting decimated, and she related to Foa Foa getting decimated in Survivor: Samoa. She added the show to her list. Josh suggests, "The bugs are eating you because they want some of that magic." -She isn't going to tell people her story until she's in the Final 3. "That's that Final 3 magic." She doesn't want to overly rely on strategy. She doesn't want to win individual challenges. She to build a social game and find ways to relate to everyone. My take: She's so full of exuberance. There's not a negative bone in her body right now. She's too young and her life experience is too necessarily limited to talk around three years of her life. If she shares her story, the beauty of her perspective will cause everyone to fall in love with her and want her to do well. If she doesn't, people will sense that she's hiding a lot. I think she'll figure that out and course correct within the first day. Since she was at the same Air Force base as Sandra and she was a massive fan, does that suggest she knows her? Ronnie Bardah, 35, Professional Poker Player, Henderson, Nevada-Born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, 20 minutes south of Boston. They were the only Israeli family in town. 50% of the people in Brockton were from Cape Verde, and he considers himself an "honorary Cape Verdian." A couple of his friends were shot and killed at a young age. -He was a good kid and had a good heart, but he was always hustling. In Junior High he was flipping Oatmeal Cakes and Fudge Rounds for a profit. Slinging baseball cards. Both his parents gambled. They were always at the dog tracks or Mohegan Sun. He had his friend make him a fake ID and got stuck with the name Alaja Jones. He went by Al and started playing the casinos. Quit his job at Sears Automotive to play poker full time.-He played Atlantic City, Vegas, then internationally. He had his first big score in 2010 when he took 24th place in the main event for $320,000. Got to keep $150,000 after taxes. "Poker's a hard way to make an easy living. Lots of people try. We risk every day. You have to get to a point when you can manage your bankroll and I've never gone broke in the 16 years I've played." -In one of the most viewed poker hands of all time, he was bluffed out of a million dollar pot by a supermodel on a poker TV show filmed in Monaco. "She made a sick play. She had no idea what she was doing but all the stars were aligned."-He watched Borneo when it aired and got back into it when fellow poker player Anna Khait was on. He calls Jean-Robert, "kinda a lazy guy...He's really good at befriending multi-millionaires." "Anna Khait... is probably the least poker player out of all of us. She played for a couple years." "And then Garrett - He's a very, very smart, smart kid... Self-made millionaire. One of the very, very few." -He only drank water for 7.5 days and lost 25 pounds for his health and to get an idea of the conditions of the show. He thinks he'll thrive in the survival situation. "People like being around me. I like to fucking bust balls and joke." He thinks old school alliances are a good plan, but you have to adapt. He says that like in poker, Survivor players can have every advantage, but they have to really smell it. -He wants Vince out. "There's an Asian Zeke in there. What value does he bring besides ruining people and getting in people's heads? He's a liability in challenges. He looks like a little corn puff. We gotta get him outta here. Sorry to sound so mean but it's the truth." My take: Ruuuuude. He has no way of knowing how other people on the cast are talking in their interviews, and may assume the trash talk is standard. If he were playing on some seasons it would be. But, in this particular season it sets him apart in an unflattering way, and it seems a part of the tough persona he's built up to escape a scary situation growing up and enter a fantasy career. We'll see whether his tribe thinks he's a straight talking character or a jerk. Tom Laidlaw, Former NHL Player, Brampton, Ontario, Canada -He was with the New York Rangers for 7 years and the LA Kings for 4. Now he has his own podcast, True Grit Life (truegritlife.com). Does it with a friend, Kevin Allen, who writes for USA Today. Does motivational speaking. -Growing up on a dairy farm outside Toronto there was a pond to water the cows. It froze over in the winters and he'd play hockey because there wasn't much else to do. Went to Northern Michigan University - four year hockey captain, ranked #1 team in the country. Drafted as a 20 year old. "My buddy had a horse farm. We were cleaning horse shit out of the stalls. There were no cell phones back then. This is 1978. My father got a call at our farm house from the New York Rangers at the draft. Back then nobody went to the draft - it was just teams. They said I'd been drafted in the sixth round. He calls the farm house where I'm working. They bring me up. He says, 'Son, you've been drafted by the Rangers.' I said, 'Great. What do I do now?' He says, 'Finish cleaning the shit out of the stalls.'" -When he played intimidation and fighting was strategy. There were guys tougher than him, but he could fight and he could also play. Problem was, he fought a guy once, and from then on the guy wanted to fight him over and over. -Jerry Bruckheimer, big hockey fan, called the NHL and wanted to get some players on the Amazing Race. Tom had kept himself in shape, he had his passport. They ended up asking him about Survivor. He'd watched it before but not for a while. He wasn't so sure he wanted to play a game where you hurt other people, but friends helped him get his head around it. He was very impressed by Christian's toughness in the endurance challenge. To prepare for the show he studied how he reacted to different situations, how to control his heart heart, etc. He wants the mental challenge. My take: Tom really ticked me off when he spoiled a couple of outcomes of this season. That's a betrayal of the producers, his cast and the viewers. But, if that hadn't happened I would like him. He's an easy-going, charming guy. His life experiences are a bit different than anyone else who's been on the show, which is what you want. Vince Moua, 27, Admissions Counselor, Merced, CA -His family is Hmong. His parents lived in Vietnam in the destruction left by the war - dead bodies, guns, people who wanted to kill them. They went to refugee camps in Thailand. Then his dad became a Montana farm hand. He met Vince's mom in the US, but she came from the same place. -Vince is from small town Merced, California - the 209. Few people he knew went anywhere but the UC system and community college. He went to Stanford, one of only 7-10 Hmong. He realized the significance someone can bring to people from the same community. He tried to be pre-med but realized "no, not today." The issues of access he cared about came well before people got to the hospital. He ended up going with education. His mom was a teacher, "But when I was growing up she said, 'Yo, if you become a teacher Imma disown yo ass.' To all of us. But, that's always kinda been my jam." -He lived in South Korea for five years. He taught English in a town. Then in Seoul ahed worked with low and middle income students who wanted to study outside of Korea. -He's a Survivor superfan, who even mentions on his Tinder account that he plans to be on Survivor. His parents were worried about him doing TV because he's not out as gay to his extended family. He comes from a clan where his dad is the "top dog" and Vince is "the next top dog." In the Asian American/Pacific Islander community when you come out, it's your family who faces - in a sense - dishonor. For a long time he distanced himself from his family, hoping they'd all be less hurt if they found out and disowned him. He always tried to find friends who would be there for him should his parents not be. A year ago his mom asked him rhetorically if he was gay. "I was try'n to go around it. I was like, 'Gurl, you don't wanna know! Yo ass keeps asking!' But she kept asking, asking. So finally I told her 'Yeah, I am!' and she was crying. My dad was like, 'Oh, my son!'" But, Vince is fine with who he is and wants to show kids like him that "let's hope that it gets better." Now his parents just want him to win. -He'd like to play an old school strategy but "I'm not afraid to cut a bitch." With the tribe he's going to be Homeboy Vince from the 209, but when he talks to the camera he's going to tell people "Don't underestimate your narratives." This past year with Crazy Rich Asians, he wants people to know that there are some Crazy Hood Ass Asians. My take: What a character. Vince has a clear point of view - Hmong, blue collar, gay - which is unique to him in Survivor lore. Even though double minorities have sometimes had trouble fitting in socially on Survivor I think somehow he's going to pull it off. As unlikely as this sounds I could even see him being a Cochran-esque winner. Aaron Meredith, 36, Personal Trainer, Warwick, Rhode Island -He's very keyed up at Ponderosa. Rambling so fast it sounds like you're listening to 1.5x. He's read four books so far - Relentless by Tim Grover, Can't Hurt Me by Dave Goggins, Iron Cowboy by James Lawrence, Harry Potter. -He was an engineer at a building insulation plant. He was miserable, too antsy sitting at a desk. Couldn't focus. So, he drove up and down the East Coast popping kettle corn - from Maine to Florida - traveling with carnies. Bartended for a while. He'd played college football and baseball, lifted since high school, and he and his friends wanted to get "huge and jacked and ripped." The owner of the gym suggested he become a personal trainer. He ended up working mostly with middle aged women and it taught him empathy. Now he owns two women's-only fitness studios. He puts supportive women around one another and offers them the positivity to seek self-growth. -He's also a party boat emcee. Lights, DJ, bar, drinks. He's an extremely social person. -He'd first applied at 23 - 6 or 7 times over the years. He was in the mix for Cook Islands and David vs. Goliath. -He's been married 7 years and has a 5 year old son. His son is a huge fan of Survivor. Libby Vincek is his favorite player. Kara Kay was his next favorite. Aaron is already sure Molly will be his son's favorite. "He has a type. He He likes the attractive blondes. He says, 'I like them because they have a nice face.' I like mommy because she has a nice face too." The boy was very concerned about his dad going on the show. He said, "Dad, I don't want anyone to laugh at you and make fun of you." Aaron said he wanted to win. His son said, "But you might not win." When they watch the show he'll always ask, "Do they like him? Do they like her?" If Aaron is portrayed in a negative light he'll have to sit down with his son and talk. He doesn't want to play a deceitful game, but he will, because he doesn't care how he's portrayed. My take: His story about his son is one of my favorites from all these interviews. I hope he gets to work with Molly. His adrenaline is too high. I hope he calms down a lot when the game starts. But, someone so social and sweet hearted who can win challenges and take themselves to the end has got to be a contender to win. Chelsea Walker, 27, Digital Content Editor, Los Angeles, CA -Chelsea just took the cast photo and they put her in the third spot from the bottom, a good omen because a weird number of winners have been in that position. "Your girl's number three. I got this!" -She's a Jersey girl. She went to the University of Maryland. "I didn't do Survivor: Maryland or anything." She studied Broadcast Journalism. She knew the generic emails for NBC Universal and emailed random people until someone replied. Now she's been in LA a year. She did coverage of award shows. Now she works at IMDB, where she helps Kevin Smith with his show. She just interviewed people at SXSW. -She's been watching Survivor since she was 8. She's cried in every interview because this means so much to her. She's trying to explain that at the point she starts crying again. "It's been such a dream of mine and To be told no year after year after year - these past six years have been a total mindfuck. I've basically been called every single year. I've been to finals three times. Survivor is my one true love, but the one year they didn't call me I got really pissed off so I tried out for Big Brother. I ended up becoming the alternate and got my key being filmed and all of that crap. But I don't like that show anyway." -In September 2017 she was at a WeHo bar for her friend's birthday when, "Oh shit that's Jeff Probst." Her girlfriends all know she's obsessed, so she pulled the waiter over and asked what that guy was drinking. So, Chelsea sent another one over. "I told my friends, 'Take my credit card. Split the bill, because I can't come back after I do this. As soon as the waiter drops off the drink I'm like, 'Jeff, this one's on me. You can buy me the next one at finals.' And I just walked out of the restaurant... That was a big move!" They didn't call her again that year, but Jeff still remembered when they talked this year. -She's been working out at four different gyms - weights, pilates, yoga. Push ups. Memorized puzzles. Reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, which she keeps in.a Bible sleeve so people will think she's religious. She also carries Harry Potter because she would trust someone who read HP. She wants to keep it cool. Make one on one connections. Eventually find idols - and not tell anyone she has one - and make calculated moves. "I don't want to be a Jacob. No offense." My take: Hearing this girl cry from joy because she's so happy to be on the show makes me emotional. She's a real go getter. I wish I were that damn fearless. Truly, I wish I were more like her. I hope her pure zest for life comes across on TV and she doesn't get stuck with a purple edit just because of her age and gender. I also hope no one decides to get threatened by her as a competitive girl and vote her off premerge. I think she'll go far. Hope so. Dean Kowalski, 28, Account Executive, New York, New York -Referring to himself in the third person, "Dean is 28 years old. As we mentioned, he lives in New York and he prides himself on being a well rounded person when it comes to interests, abilities, personalities... If I'm listening to Drake and Lil Wayne, I gotta go home and cry to This Is Us.. I can play basketball but also think about our place in the universe." He likes to tag basketball courts with a peace symbol with a ball on it which he makes using a stencil. -He structures most of his interview with Josh around an Outwit, Outplay, Outlast format, explaining why he excels at each. -He grew up in an affluent suburb. His dream was to play in the NBA. He was 5"9 3/4, so he set his eyes on college basketball as a realistic alternative. In order to get looks from colleges he went to a school 30 minutes away - top five in the country, Nike would fly them around for games and give them free Jordan sneakers. He was one of only 4 white guys in the whole school and the only one on the team. He played with Kyrie Irving, the #1 overall draft pick. "My friend said you look like the Make a Wish Kid who just wants to be on the team for a day." He played at Colombia University, where he was co-captain his senior year despite averaging two minutes a game. He became a teacher, then did sales for a tech startup in New York. He now sells ads for Google. -He's a fan, but far from a superfan. He started watching Brenda's season. (He thinks it was Nicaragua, but it was actually Carmoan.) He works with a superfan who freaked out when they had a meeting at H&R Block with Carolyn Rivera and they went out to Bourbon Street with her. He kept watching for five years and thought he could do well. He hates when people are all talk, so he sent in a tape. For the video he interviewed random strangers on the street, who had never met him or seen the show, and asked them, "Why am I going to win it?" A barber, a construction worker. He's going to tell people he's in marketing, not sales - people have sales. My take: I'm just not that into him. Elaine Stott, 41, Factory Worker, Rockholds, NY -When Josh asks her not to touch the table she asks him, "You seen that Bart Simpson commercial, right? Don't touch my Butterfinger? I'm already hungry thinking about it." -"I had a pretty rough way to go growing up." Her single dad raised her and her three brothers. She was the youngest. "I was raised like one of the boys. Know what I mean? Daddy didn't know how to raise no little girl." He worked 16-17 hour days. The kids raised themselves. "When little children make their own decisions, they make poor ones." She was a hellion. -She's originally from Woodbine, Kentucky, Nick Wilson's hometown. Her god sister went to school with him and she knows him through the grapevine. "We rode on different sides of the track. 20 years ago he coulda been my lawyer, because I was on the other side of the law. I'm not bad. I've just done some things." Public intoxication several times. "I come from a dry county. It's like Footloose. We cross the state line to get a beer and when you come back you're in trouble." She stole a newspaper stand once and had to do community service. "I was a little bit mean." -She went to live with her grandpa and cleaned her act up, by which she means that she started smoking a little weed and playing sports - basketball, softball, track. She played softball and judo in college. "I couldn't do nothing real technical. We had Brazilians on the team who could do flying arm bars. But if I got these claws on you and got ya on the ground I'd waller you to death." In casting she put this guy Will in an armbar. She was gonna choke him but didn't know if she should. -When she graduated, her girlfriend was a college Freshman so she went to all the same parties and ballgames for four years. Then she realized she needed a job. Now she drives a Ford truck for a factory. She's been there 15 years. She works 12 hours, 7 days a week. -Growing up her mom "was always in my life in some sense. She'd never miss a birthday. She'd be homeless, but she'd still call." Elaine and her brothers bought her cars, and places to live, and got her jobs. "In a sense I've been mourning the loss of my mom my whole life." Once Elaine was homeless herself and there was snow on the ground. It was cold, and her teacher took her in. Gave her Christmas presents. Made her go to prom. Survivor was a thing they shared, and the teacher was gonna be Elaine's loved one. But within a one year period the woman lost her daughter, her husband, her dog and then had a stroke. Now "she walks like Frankenstein" and can't go. Elaine got Probst to talk to her, and she can't wait to watch. In October Elaine's biological mom went into a coma. She was on life support, but Elaine wouldn't unplug her. Her mom came out of it and seemed to be doing a lot better only to die very suddenly of a heart attack. -Her girlfriend and her girlfriend's two sons are gonna be watching. The 18 year old doesn't know because he can't keep a secret. The 13 year old helped her lose 20 pounds doing crossfit to come out here. She wants the money, but she really wants "some of that soul searching, that life adventure, that life changing - some of that. You know what I mean? Gimme some of that soup! Lemme eat some of that up! I want this show to build me up, because I feel like it can. I sure hope to hell it don't tear me down." My take: About 12 sobbing emojis in a row. She's my favorite. If she gets voted out premerge I'm going to go into mourning. And how can you not sort of expect that? I am going to be so upset if they just dismiss her because she's older and looks out of shape and sounds country. If that happens, I want another Second Chance season next year. Elizabeth Biesel, 26, Olympic swimmer, South Kingstown, Rhode Island -Josh says that Elizabeth was outright identified by one of the other contestants because they'd been watching YouTube videos about how to be a better swimmer. Others guessed she was an Olympian based on her rings tattoo. -She's from the Ocean State. They lived a block away from the beach, so they wanted her to take swimming lessons. She was a rambunctious child and swimming was the only way they could calm her energy. She started breaking records when she was 7 or 8. When she was 13 she made her first national team. At 15 she went to the Olympics. She got good early. Women peak around 22-23, and she ended her career at 24. You couldn't make much money doing it. She swam one of the longer, more grueling races, and her body said "no more." She listened to her body and retired. Some athletes lose their love for swimming because they're embittered by losing by 1/100th of a second, or they leave injured. She left on a good note. Still, if she could swim competitively for the rest of her life, she would. Now she doesn't know who she is or what she's going to do with the rest of her life. Every hour of the day used to have a purpose. Now her days are wide open. She can't keep eating 5,000 calories a day. "It's sort of like I'm mourning the death of Elizabeth Biesel the swimmer." -She was a Survivor fan as a kid because Richard Hatch was from Rhode Island. In her area "Every single household that had a television set was watching Survivor." When they asked her if she'd do the show, she felt pure joy. She said absolutely right away. She's excited about the competition of Survivor. No heated Olympic pools. You're stripped down to your core. She's amazed by the scope of the production apparatus. She's not a schemer. She wants to be a challenge beast - not the best woman but the best overall. She'd love to have a Wendell and Dom relationship with another woman. But, she wants to avoid the drama as long as she can. My take: Could Chelsea be Wendell to her Dom? She's so wholesome. She's just so "Olympics." I love her and everything she represents. I'd love to see her rocket through the swimming competitions, lapping everyone else. Go Elizabeth.
Hi guys - before we move forward with the weekly things to do post, we wanted to provide some clarity on why a new account is creating this post and provide the community with some information about who we are and how this came about. We’ll keep this intro brief for the sake of getting to what you actually came here for, finding cool things to do this week! We are 4 childhood friends (and are all Redditors as well), who grew up living and hanging out in Toronto. We realized every time we hung out we ended up at the same places because it was far too cumbersome to find anything else, and even though we wanted to explore new things, it just felt easier to go somewhere familiar. We decided we’d try our hand at creating something that makes discovering new things to do easy, and over the last few years and countless of hours later, we created the ExploreTO app. We really admired the daily things to do posts, and also aspired to contribute to the Reddit community in a way that is aligned with our passion project. Our focus on event research has been increasing over the last several months and when we saw that the mods have started doing the posts, we reached out to see if there was a way we can contribute. We are very delighted that the mods gave us the opportunity to create these weekly posts on a trial basis, and we hope you enjoy them! We also wanted to get ahead of some questions that you may be wondering about: How will this affect me as a user who frequently uses these posts? It won’t. We wanted to be transparent in this post because we know the passing of the torch may be confusing. We hope to maintain a great and consistent experience with these posts and improve it further over time based on feedback from the community. We don’t want these posts to turn into anything but what they have always been: a community generated post that captures the best things happening in Toronto. So what’s in it for you? To be frank, these posts take quite a bit of time a week to compile, especially if you aren’t already doing it for another purpose (we are, for our app). We thought it might be mutually beneficial to the community for us to generate these posts as we’re already doing a lot of event research. The community will get a weekly things to do thread that is continuously updated & improved, and we will get exposure for our app. We will never be impartial to events that “benefit us”, this will not only be true in the Reddit threads we post, but also in the app itself. We see our job as finding the best things to do based on the merit of the events themselves. We will never post affiliate or sponsored links on Reddit, however, if the community believes we’re doing a good job, we would be happily welcome anyone to check out our app. Closing thoughts Just like the app was created as a passion project, these posts will only be a continuation of said project. We have no clue how far the app will go and we’ve already spent thousands of hours working on it with nothing earned but the joy of a few positive reviews on the app store. We will however, ask you – the community, for one thing: if you enjoy these posts or derive some benefit from them, occasionally, please let us know. Between our day jobs and our evening passion project that is this app, we’re running on fumes and positive reinforcement. This is the first and last time we will add this intro on the post. Thank God I kept a journal, I now have proof that my in-laws are nuts. For the record, I have a terrible memory and therefore I forgot about how crazy they are, which is why they were in my life for far too long. This is also my first post. I just joined Reddit today. Prior to my relationship with DH – I know my MIL practically forced DH to be in dance classes when he was a child, as she was trying to live vicariously through him as she had a terrible childhood. One time she grabbed his dance instructor by the neck and pinned her up against a wall. She punched DH in the face one time and broke his nose. He’s had problems with his nose ever since with just not being able to breathe properly, etc. and she’s chased him around the house with a sledgehammer and broke holes in the walls. June 2010 – DH lived in Ottawa (3.5 hours away) and worked 5 days on, 5 days off so he’d come back to our hometown on his days off. We would normally stay at his parent’s house, but on one occasion his brother (who is 8 years older, a crackhead alcoholic, been arrested hundreds of times, has 3 kids who he’s never supported either mentally or financially, never paid into taxes, etc.) came home late at night, not sober, and was mad that DH and I had set up a nice bed in one of the bedrooms, which was where he normally slept on a cot, but DH had moved the cot to the other bedroom. His brother kicked down a door, poured pop all over DH, punched DH in the face, smashed beer bottles and a light, and when the in-laws came down they blamed DH and said that I wasn’t allowed to be there, even though previously she’d said I was allowed. So we went back to my house and the next day my stepmom went out and bought a futon so DH could stay there when he was in town (she wouldn’t let us stay in the same room lol). March 2011 – My mom was unable to keep her Himalayan kitten due to moving and her new roommate being allergic, and DH knew his mom always wanted a Himalayan so he called his mom and told her about the kitten, and she told him to tell my mom to give her a call. My mom calls her, and MIL says “oh, I want a boy!” even though she already knew it was a girl. This was also their first interaction with one another. August 2011 – My brother stopped by my in-laws house (he and DH were best friends so he was friends with my in-laws) and my MIL told my brother that if he didn’t take the two pieces of art that I had left there that she was going to donate them. Even though weeks prior she had asked me a few weeks prior if I wanted to keep them, because she liked them and wanted to hang them up. I had told her that they were a gift, but she could hang them for now, but I’d want them back in the future. May 2012 – Went to dinner with my in-laws and my MIL complained about everything, including her “spicy” vanilla milkshake. She didn’t eat her hamburger at all. This wasn't the first, or last, time that she complained about a meal at a restaurant and refused to eat. June 2012 – We were preparing to move to Pakistan so we decided it would be best to leave our two cats and our dog with the in-laws, as we didn’t know what it was going to be like overseas (we had little information given to us) and we were worried. We brought the animals to my in-laws, and the following occurred. We had two cats. An orange tabby named Fawkes, and a Tonkinese named Cougar. Upon arrival at the in-laws, Cougar peed on the bed and on a blanket. Cougar was like 11 or 12, we had adopted him from a friend who was moving cross-country. MIL said something along the lines of “you know what happened to the other animals when they pissed me off” (DH told me that she tried to choke them and gave them away). MIL also said she didn’t want Cougar but wanted Fawkes. We then mentioned the idea of maybe taking our dog with us overseas, and his parents kept saying not to, and that she was better off staying with them. Later on, MIL says “you don’t expect to take them back do you?” Weeks later… Arrived at our in-laws house and DH opened the door and Cougar got out, so I started panicking because they are indoor cats. FIL says “oh don’t worry, he loves going outside”. We specifically told them not to let the cats outside. Later on MIL asks if I’m okay with leaving the animals with her and I told her no, they haven’t listened to any of our instructions thus far and just got a new kitten. Then we are out in the backyard, and DH was ashing his cigarette on the deck and MIL asked him not to because she’d have to wash the deck, so he moved closer to the ashtray. She out of nowhere flips out and storms off inside, slamming the doors behind her. I went in and knocked on the door to MIL’s room, she told me to fuck off but opened it anyway. I told her that DH wanted to leave (keep in mind we are moving to Pakistan very soon) and she says “good, leave, fuck off, and take the animals with you!” then slammed the door in my face. July 2012 – MIL calls to say that she’s booking a vet appointment for Cougar because he continues to pee all over the place. They had to buy a new couch because of it. She also told us that she bought some pills recommended by PetSmart to give to our dog, so she didn’t kill their grass when she peed. Later on… We called the vet after the appointment because the in-laws couldn’t answer any of our questions about what happened at the appointment. Apparently Cougar has bladder stones and it’s going to cost $1500 for surgery but this will stop him from peeing everywhere. August 2012 – (We are now living in Pakistan) DH told my in-laws that I was now worried about our future children being around them, if they can’t even listen to simple instructions regarding animals. FIL got mad and I had to apologize. In-laws mentioned that if they were to go away, they’d take our dog to their friend’s house, who lives in the country and has an unfenced yard. I said no. “Oh, but he’s a nice guy and we trust him!” Paid the $1500 for surgery and Cougar is still peeing everywhere. I knew it wouldn’t work, as he had been peeing everywhere when we first got him also, but trained him not to and he eventually stopped. DH also bought his mom a new duvet because Cougar had ruined hers. They went through all the bags of kitty litter that we had bought them, and we bought them 6 months’ worth. Instead of scooping the poop out, they just dumped the whole entire litter box out at the end of every day. April 2013 – My brother got arrested (he’s a good kid so this came as a complete shock) and I wanted to go home to Canada. DH told MIL that I might be coming home and she told DH that Cougar passed away MONTHS AGO. DH felt like something was wrong, so he told MIL “I feel like something’s wrong, is there anything you want to tell me?” she said no. “How’s Cougar?” “Oh Cougar’s fine, he just doesn’t do much.” “DH: “He’s dead isn’t he?” MIL: “No!” DH: “tell me the truth!” MIL: “Ok he’s dead”. Also realized that our dog (German shepherd) isn’t listening very well and that’s because they aren’t stern or persistent with her. August 2013 – We flew our dog to Pakistan only to discover that she was severely overweight. When we left her, she was 80lbs. When we got her back, she was 130lbs. Thanks to my in-laws. DH was so mad. When we got home from picking her up at the airport, he called MIL and gave her a blast of shit. He told her that he felt “used” because he’d been paying for everything, expecting to get the same dog back. But she legit was nothing like she once was. She had trouble climbing stairs, running, walking even. He was mad that his parents didn’t tell him that anything was wrong, and he had even bought his mom a trip to Vancouver so she could visit DH’s half-brother and half-sister (two of her kids from a previous relationship). MIL kept saying “oh but she’s (dog) so beautiful!” and trying to downplay the whole thing, and then “oh you would’ve been really mad if you seen her a few weeks ago, she was huge!” WTF. And she kept telling DH that she didn’t think the dog was fat and she didn’t notice. She kept saying “I don’t know what to say”. MIL admitted that our dog was getting fed twice a day, plus biscuits from them and the neighbours, was getting table scraps, potato chips, whatever, and may have gotten into the cat food. We had given them a baby gate that we had cut a hole in, to keep our dog out of the “cat room” at our house. So we asked them why hadn’t they used it, and they claimed to have never been given it. DH had even offered to install it, and FIL had said no. June 2014 – We went home to Canada and DH took his mom shopping and must’ve spent at least $1000 on her. We asked her if she was enjoying the new stuff DH bought her and she stated “oh it’s just cheap stuff anyway” and that she realized she didn’t like it and had given it away. She also never said thank you when he originally bought her the clothes. RAGE. She asked DH to buy her a $700 chandelier even though she had $3000 in her bank account and can afford to bail DH’s brother out all the time and buy him cigarettes and give him money for alcohol/drugs/whatever he needs. May 2015 – We went on our house hunting trip and the in-laws came with us, since we decided it was a good idea (what was I thinking) that they come and live with us in Alberta, to get away from their crazy son who they are enabling. So we are on this house hunting trip and MIL keeps saying “I get a room!” but she was insinuating that she was going to be locked away in a basement room, but no, the basement has a full living room, bathroom, and 3 bedrooms (which they utilized two of when they were here). She kept saying that if she just wanted a room, she’d move out on her own. Apparently the tension was thick. Why did we continue to go through with it? It was doomed from the start. And there were houses that we’d arrive at, and MIL wouldn’t even get out of the car. Mind you, DH and I were buying this house, the in-laws were not contributing money towards it. DH had a stern conversation with MIL that he had embarrassed her in front of the realtor, and that she can’t act like this in a small town. Then FIL said that he could send us money each month if we needed help, and we told them no, if you don’t plan on living with us, then we will just buy a smaller house. We can afford it, but we need to purchase appropriately. But the whole house hunting trip was an absolute nightmare. We were focused on trying to buy a house, but MIL was concerned about going to Walmart (she went 5 times in a week) and to the casino (twice). August 2015 – The in-laws FINALLY put their house on the market after knowing they would be moving for several months. They kept telling us “not to worry” because it’d sell in no time. December 2015 – The in-laws FINALLY sold their house. And moved in with us. I asked my MIL how she liked her new bedroom… her reply: “it’s a room!” after I had cleaned it and made it all nice and presentable. I then went to the grocery store, came back and MIL asks if I got orange juice. I said no. “Well I need orange juice. I drink it every morning. Helps with my bowels.” They kept complaining that the house was too cold (it was set to 21 Celsius, 69.8 F) so I turned it up to 23 C, 73.4 F. It was too hot for DH and I, so we had to open our window (in the middle of December in northern Alberta) and the window froze open and had icicles on the inside, so we told them this and FIL goes “no worries” which is a typical response from him, along with “all good!” We took the in-laws to the best restaurant in town, where everything is made from scratch and fresh, and the menu changes daily depending on what’s in season or in stock at the grocery store, and MIL complained the entire time and didn’t eat her meal, and FIL complained a bit too. MIL tells me that if she ever has an issue with me, she will tell me straight up. Their shipment arrives, and we are unloading it. I see Fawkes on top of a piece of furniture, so I take him off. MIL tells FIL that she doesn’t like this (why? I don’t know) and DH overhears that conversation. Then DH tells me that his parents think I’m not friendly. We have a family meeting. I somehow found out that MIL had a talk with her MIL, and said that she would never get along with me, I confront her about this, and she denies it. DH stuck up for me and confirmed that this conversation had in fact happened. I confronted MIL about the cat situation, when we left them with them and how they didn’t listen to any of our instructions. MIL starts going on about how Fawkes is her cat. I then said “tell me what really happened to Cougar” (they’d previously said he just died) and she then says “we gave him away!” At this point I got up, pretty much said to DH “I told you so!” and left the room. Nobody bothered to come after me. I went back. I told them that giving him away wasn’t their decision to make, we could’ve shipped him to Pakistan, I could’ve given him to my sister or another family member, there were many options. I told MIL that she was a liar and she starts dancing around saying “oh I’m a liar!” They never apologized for anything. January 2016 – I am babysitting a 2 year old boy for a friend, and my friend was due to pick her son up at 5:30. I had given him some snacks, but I didn’t feed him dinner because she was coming at 5:30 and I didn’t know what her dinner plans were, and she didn’t tell me to feed him dinner. My MIL got mad at me because I was eating dinner in front of the 2 year old (I had to go to soccer that night, so I had to eat then). I sent a text to my friend to see if she wanted me to feed her son, just to get MIL off my back. She kept going on. FIL pipes up to say that I sent a text and we are awaiting a response. She then proceeds to start swearing and yelling at FIL in front of the 2 year old, tells FIL to get his “fucking hands off her”, shoved FIL, made a fist like she was going to punch him, and stormed off downstairs. So it’s wrong of me to eat dinner in front of a 2 year old, but she can act like a complete fucking psycho? April 2016 – Our dog was getting sick a lot and I asked if everyone in the house (in-laws and we also had a roommate who had a puppy) to stop feeding our dog ANYTHING, period. I needed to start tracking what she was eating to find out what was making her sick. She began getting better once I told everyone to stop feeding her things. One day at dinner, MIL gets out an ice cream sandwich and right at the dinner table, in front of everyone, goes to let our dog lick the ice cream sandwich. DH jumped up so fast and pushed it away from our dog. MIL goes “I was only going to let her have a lick” and DH says “the whole thing was in her mouth!” It was also chocolate. And MIL didn’t believe DH when he told her it was chocolate… until she tasted it. She then announces that our dog loves cheesies. July 2016 – I'm pregnant and due in December. MIL tells me that I need to hurry up and have this baby because it’s affecting her too. Apparently she’s sensitive to smells these days. August 2016 – We did a road trip to British Columbia with the in-laws. We stopped at many places on the way, and eventually left them in Vancouver so they could spend time with MIL’s daughter (DH’s half-sister). DH and I continued on to Victoria to visit our friends. When it was time for the in-laws to come to Victoria, MIL was super awkward and just sat in the backyard away from everyone. We went to breakfast with the in-laws and MIL commented on how thin the pregnant waitress was and that you wouldn’t know she was pregnant until she turned around, and DH said “well (my name) is like that too” and MIL said “no she’s not, she’s wider in the hips” blah blah blah. We were having a yard sale and MIL was having a meltdown because she has separation anxiety and asked if I wanted some of the belongings that she had intended to sell. I said no, I have enough junk of my own, and she had a fit because I don’t like anything that she likes. DH stuck up for me and said it was perfectly fine that we have different tastes/likes. And no, she did not assist with the yard sale. October 2016 – MIL came and woke me up to see when we were going to leave for the craft show. I told her that I just needed to sleep a bit longer and she said she’d start to get ready. I couldn’t fall back asleep, so I went downstairs to hang out with the in-laws. I mentioned that the one lady I was meant to meet at the craft show wasn’t going to be there, so MIL says “we don’t have to go anymore?” and I asked her if she didn’t want to go, and she said no. So why did she wake me up to go??? November 2016 – My in-laws cat began scratching our leather couch set that we had bought when we first moved into the house, so it was probably only a year old, maybe. I asked the in-laws to start keeping the basement door closed so that the cat couldn’t come upstairs. They live downstairs, it’s where they sleep and watch TV. We live in a raised bungalow, so it’s not a typical dark basement. The windows are above ground, so it’s actually bright and nice down there, like any other house. And they are down there unless they’re using the kitchen, so I honestly see no reason why they can’t just leave the basement door closed so that the cat won’t ruin our belongings. When I went and asked my in-laws to keep the cat downstairs, MIL yells at FIL “I told you so [FIL’s name]!” A few days went by, they were keeping her downstairs, but then I’d show up at the house earlier than expected and the cat would be upstairs and they’d practically come running up to grab her. They literally got rid of my cat because it was peeing in their house, yet their cat is scratching up my furniture, and I’m not asking them to get rid of the cat, I’m only asking that they keep the cat downstairs. DH starts asking me what we are going to do about the two dining chairs that are currently in the garage. I told him that he said I could keep them there, as we don’t need them on a day to day basis in the kitchen. I suggested that if he had an issue with them in the garage, we could put them under the stairs, and that the garage needs to get organized anyway. Out of nowhere, MIL yells up from the basement “don’t worry about the dining set because I’m sick of this shit and we are moving out!” They then ran off to Bingo (which they basically went to 6 days a week for the first several months of living with us, and god only knows how much money they spent at Bingo while they lived with us). Of course they never apologized for the cat scratching up our leather furniture. DH also got upset because he had hoped that his parents living with us would give him the relationship that he had always hoped to have with his father and that his parents always favoured his brother over him. The in-laws were ignoring us after the fight where MIL announced she was moving out. FIL walked outside one night when DH was brushing the dog, and said “how’s it going” to FIL who responded with “good”. DH asks “how was your day today?” and FIL says “great”. Then the next day DH comes home and FIL opens the basement door a tiny crack to let our dog out, and DH marches down and says to his parents “well that was the most awkward thing ever. Hello to you too!” Then his parents started talking to him, and FIL asked if we still had the microwave that was in the garage (we didn’t) and if he could buy the TV that we had in the garage. DH said that they could have it. They also announced that they’d found an apartment and DH got mad because there was no discussion at all about this. DH and I are at breakfast one morning and he tells me some things. MIL has always gone on about how she gets along so well with her MIL and mentioned that she wanted to go home for Christmas (and would therefore miss the birth of our child) because she wanted to see her MIL, and how she’d spent every Christmas (except for the previous one) with her MIL. DH tells me that his mom hated his grandma up until recently and that every Christmas was a constant battle because his mom didn’t want to go to his grandma’s house and that he and his brother would sit in the car for hours while his parents fought inside. Come home and the cat is upstairs again with the basement door open. DH says that his parents are doing this on purpose so that we get mad and it will give them more ammunition and reason to leave without them feeling bad. DH says they do this often. DH and the in-laws got into an argument and MIL tells DH that she loves me sometimes, hates me at other times, that I am difficult to live with, they feel like they are a burden on us, that they only moved here to help us, etc. DH told them that we didn’t need their help, we would’ve bought a cheaper house and we would’ve been fine. My friend hosted a surprise baby shower for me and my MIL did not come although she was invited, because she “doesn’t do baby showers” and she claimed that nobody threw her a baby shower when she was pregnant, even though FIL said that yes, she did have a baby shower. Still November….. Woke up at 3am on a Saturday morning and it literally stunk so badly in our bedroom. I assumed that our dog had farted but it was so powerful so I got up and went out to the living room and there was liquid doggy diarrhea ALL OVER THE CARPET. Apparently this was the 5th time this month, I just didn’t document the first four. Keep in mind that I am due in December, so I’m super pregnant. Anyway, I scrubbed the floor at 3am and then had a shower and went back to bed, but had to wake up early for our maternity photoshoot that day. I also discovered that when we got the mortgage, you have the option of including the yearly property taxes in with your mortgage payments or you can pay them yourself every year. FIL said that he’d pay the property tax each summer ($3500) and I discovered that he conveniently didn’t pay it for the previous year, and obviously now that they are moving out, we will be responsible for coming up with that $3500 each year. DH also gave his parents several thousands of dollars for money they had previously given us, but he didn’t want to feel like he was indebted to them, so he gave some of it back. December 2016 – The in-laws finally moved out! They came over the day they moved out to give us a bag of dog treats that they had been hiding in the basement. When our dog was having all that diarrhea in November, I kept asking them if they were giving her anything and they kept saying no. They didn’t even bother to clean the basement once they moved out, so I had to clean it. I steam cleaned the carpet and had to empty the container twice and it was disgustingly dirty. We have ledges that run around some of the rooms, and they had dirt caked on them from where the cats would walk/sit. DH has a bad habit of smoking cigarettes, especially around his mother, who’s likely been smoking for 70 years (okay, well she’s only 72, but she likely started smoking when she was 10 or so). He had been smoking and I asked him to get me a drink. He took a sip of it and handed it to me. It stunk so badly and I said “this is why I don’t want you smoking around the baby!” MIL says “oh babies become immune to it”. June 2017 – We went to British Columbia on a road trip. FIL texts DH to ask where our carpet cleaner is. We had lent it to a friend. DH asks why he needs it, and he tells us that our dog had another accident in the living room. Of course, only when the in-laws are taking care of her does she have these accidents. They claimed that our dog must have eaten something she found outside. July 2017 – We came back from a mini road trip around Alberta that we had taken when our friend from Pakistan came to visit us. The in-laws had moved out of their apartment and were staying in our basement just for a couple nights, while we were on this road trip, and planned to move back to Ontario when we got back from the road trip, because they didn’t like it here. We got back from the road trip around midnight and went to bed. We woke up the next morning and the in-laws were gone. They drove/moved back to Ontario without saying goodbye. December 2017 – The in-laws bought us plane tickets to go home for Christmas. We kept asking them if they had a car seat for us to use (DH has cousins and stuff so they said they would borrow one) or if we needed to buy one and get it sent to their house. They kept saying not to worry about it, that they’d take care of it. We arrived at the airport at like 4am and went to their truck, and the car seat was not even installed. It’s 4am, we’ve just travelled a ridiculously long time (5 hour drive to the airport plus a 3 hour flight plus delays plus waiting for the bags which took over an hour), it’s like -20 C and the car seat isn’t installed? DH tried to install it but it just would not get tight. And then we realized it had to be forward facing, still didn’t get tight. We honestly didn’t have any other options so we just had to put our daughter in it and pray to god that we’d get home okay. DH was angry, but FIL just kept saying “no worries, it’s okay” and DH was like “IT’S NOT OKAY! THIS IS ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE!” but the in-laws are just completely clueless. January 2018 – We had gone home for Christmas, and stayed at the in-laws apartment. It was okay, as okay as it could be when I have to see my in-laws every day. MIL was her normal annoying self, DD was just learning to walk at this time and every day MIL would announce “oh today she walked 4 steps!” “Oh today she walked 5 steps!” and so on. It was like she was trying to prove something to me, I’m really not sure. On our last full day there, I was getting ready and went out to the living room. DH asked MIL what she was going to do that day, as we were going out and FIL was at work, and MIL doesn’t have her own vehicle. She said nothing. He asked if she wanted him to drop her off at Bingo. She said she had no money (untrue, they do have money, maybe most of it is tied up, but also while we were there they had told us how they had given their friend’s son $500 because he couldn’t pay his rent). DH said that he would pay for the Bingo and she immediately was like “OKAY!!!” And so I said “we can’t afford it either” which is 100% true. We are super struggling right now. And she said “well whose fault is that?” and I told her that yes, it’s our fault, but all the while thinking “you’re honestly okay with taking money from your son who has a young family and is struggling”. She even knows exactly how much money we are in debt, it’s tens of thousands of dollars, not including the car or the house. And with daycare starting up, that’s going to add an extra burden. So anyway, she flies up off the couch and gets right up in my face and proceeds to tell me that she doesn’t like me, I don’t like her (I told her that was untrue, I do like her, I just can only tolerate her in small doses, but didn’t mention that second part). She told me that I was antisocial, that I never talk, that I didn’t have dinner at their house once, etc. And that it would be a miracle if we were ever in the same room together again. DH unfortunately took his mother’s side on this occasion, and the rest of the day was horrible. He left, and wasn’t responding to texts or calls or anything. I went over to my sister’s and then my dad’s. My mom ended up calling my FIL about this and to ask what was going on, like my FIL was the one who was going to be driving us back to the airport early the next morning, and my FIL was just like “well if we see you at the airport tomorrow then we’ll see you” and my mom was like “uhhh there’s a child involved here!” and FIL didn’t even seem to care about that fact. Nor did DH really either, apparently. Other information - Not to mention throughout the year that they lived with us, they continued to bail DH’s brother out. When they left, they had gotten him an apartment, given him a lot of their furniture, bought him a truck, paid for one year’s worth of insurance, etc. He lost the apartment, along with everything in it. They sent him money constantly, and I know, because they had to wire money through my brother, so I had to act as a middle man. And it was a lot of money. $700 here, $500 there. Now it’s all gone, nothing to show, including the truck. And also, neither of them worked while they were here, until MIL got a job driving a school bus in August. They moved in the previous December. So for 8 months they didn’t work. They also didn’t help clean the upstairs of the house, and they rarely ever cooked dinner. DH and I worked full time, would come home from work and still cook dinner for all 4 of us. MIL claimed she didn’t feel comfortable in our kitchen, and she didn’t like our electric stove. When I gave birth, do you think she came over to help? To let me take a shower, a nap, to maybe cook a meal for us? Nope, not even one time. I think she might’ve brought food over once? And she lived here (in the same city as us) for the first 7 months of DD's life. When I was going back to work and DH was going to be at home with the baby, she said to my face “oh don’t worry, I’ll be here every day to help him!” Wow, thanks. She’s also made digs about breastfeeding (I had to stop earlier than intended, around the 6 month mark, because I’d gone back to work and pumping wasn’t working out for me) and how daycares are scary and she never sent her kids to daycare (she worked as a school bus driver since DH was born so she just took them with her). She has 7 kids. The first two kids she had when she was 14 and 15 and claimed she got pregnant via Immaculate Conception. I shit you not. Then she had two girls and a boy with some other man. Those kids went into foster care for a period of time (not sure exactly). The oldest daughter doesn’t speak to MIL. The son doesn’t speak to MIL anymore. Her daughter and her have a telephone relationship, but when DH paid for MIL to go out and visit her daughter, they got into a massive fight and the son had to come and rescue her. She hasn’t talked to the son since she left from that trip. She doesn’t talk to her two teenage grandchildren from her son. She never got along with her son’s wife. She doesn’t get along with FIL’s sister or his three adult nieces. She didn’t get along with her MIL for a very long time. And her personality is… very unique. She’s about 72 now, but you wouldn’t know it. She definitely acts younger. She’s very hyper, probably has some undiagnosed ADHD or something going on. When she gets excited she jumps around and stuff. She doesn’t hold her opinions in. we were at a store one time and she asked the teenage boy who worked there if he “liked his hair like that”. I almost died. I’m probably forgetting a bunch. Good lord. Good thing I kept a journal about this stuff because I honestly forgot a lot of it.
Okay this may seem like a dumb idea but hear me out. IndyCar racing is the most growing form of auto-racing in the United States. Its on a pace to eclipse NASCAR in a few years and maybe Hartford can come in to help. The IndyCar Open Wheel races consist of the most challenging form of racing. From short ovals such as St. Louis and Phoenix. Long ovals such as of course the Indianapolis 500 and Pocono 500, road courses such as Birmingham and Watkins Glen. And finally there is street courses. There are currently four street courses in IndyCar. Saint Petersburg, Florida, Long Beach, California, Detorit Belle Isle Michigan, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There was supposed to be a fifth track, in Boston. Boston shot it down because of mismanagement from the racing promoters and a bunch of NIMBY guys blocking it saying it was on damp soil (But Boston is on damp landfill?) and canceled the race. The overall plan with IndyCar is to have 5-5-5-5 to have a 20 race schedule in North America. A fifth needs to be filled in, why not Hartford? Well to other cities such as Detroit, and Toronto. The races are considered landmarks of urban revival in those cities. Hartford and the whole state of Connecticut was hit hard. This could possibly be the chance to get the state the money needs. Not casinos. Last year, I drove 6 hours to get to Watkins Glen since I couldnt see the race 75 minutes from my house. I wanted to go and it was a blast. With IndyCar, you can have access to the cars and drivers. On race day, the drivers are virtually accessible by anyone. The race was great and would probably do the same again. In Long Beach and Toronto, the crowds was in excess of 100,000 on race day and over 30,000 on qualifying day. Thats incredible. Now say cost general admission $5 on Friday and Saturday each, and have about say 25,000 come in. Thats about 250,000 in sales on tickets alone. This dosent count the hotels and vendors avalible. Plus many places downtown like Black Bear Saloon can get huge business from this event. There is also some feeder series with this. So if you charge $25-30 on general admission and there is about 80,000 there. There is a profit of another 2.4 Million there plus vendors. What can draw in people is names like Helio Castroneves and James Hinchcliffe, both competed on Dancing with the Stars. Tony Kanaan competed on American Ninja Warrior, add in Will Power and Conor Daly, they all were on Family Feud. Also with rising talents such as Josef Newgarden, and Alexander Rossi. That alone can draw in names from casuals who would check the event out. Also a big draw is that this event isnt a NASCAR race, and that can draw the casuals out to this event and not have to deal with those people. People from New Haven, New York, Albany, Boston, Providence, Manchester, and even further would go. Even people who go out of the way to see the races. When I went in Watkins Glen, there was people there I met from California and Oregon who went to see the race. Also what some tracks do is have concerts for the fans. At COTA in Austin, Texas. They had stars in the past like Taylor Swift do a concert there. This year its Justin Timberlake. Im sure if Connecticut's favorite Billy Joel would do a show in the Bushnell, thousands would show up and make it even more viable. Add that to the sale of the ticket, it can be worth alot. So here is the track proposal. The track start and finish line and pit road is on Columbus Ave across the street from the Connecticut Convention Center. The CCC will also be host as the garage/paddock for the teams and it can be accessible by the fans as well for a small fee. The cars would turn onto Sheldon Ave and onto Elm Street and Pulaski Circle going around it causing a very fast corner. Then it would wrap around the Jewell Street area and pass by the Arch in the Bushnell where it would probably be the place to take photos of the cars near the arch. Then it would turn right onto High Street and take another turn at Church Street and would pass under the XL Center bridge and straight into the G. Fox building where it would take another right onto Main Street. Then it would wrap around the Connecticut State Building and down the hill and it would turn back onto Columbus Ave. Another pic of the track As for seating. Its Hartford, there is so many empty lots, there is plenty of spots for grandstands. There is alot more I have in mind like traffic flows or the race and how to move the lightposts and fix the mini curb onto the Circle but its late at night. Just an idea. Any other questions? In the end, this might not be what saves Hartford and Connecticut but its worth a fighting shot. Also here is a fun tidbit - The second ever Auto Racing championship race took place in next door West Hartford at the Charter Oak Park back in 1905. Connecticut is the only state not from that original list to have a race. EDIT - that's just a number I made up for profit. I have no idea exactly but with vendors as well as the sanctioning fee. There could be a few dollars there or not.
After my last post about Regulus and bringing up the Nov 14th date spoken about in the Trackdown - End of the World Episode again, I started doing some more digging. Based upon its spectrum, it is classified as a C-type asteroid, which indicates that it probably has a carbonaceous composition. 2014 occultation of Regulus In the early morning hours of March 20, 2014, Erigone occulted the first-magnitude star Regulus as first predicted by A. Vitagliano in 2004. This would have been a rare case of an occultation of a very bright star visible from a highly populated area, since the shadow path moved across New York state and Ontario, including all five boroughs of New York City. Observers in the shadow path would have seen the star wink out for as long as 14 seconds. However, heavy clouds and rain blocked the view for most if not all people on the shadow path.
