I am 28. I live in Chicago. My salary is $60,000 as a Nonprofit Consultant. Come see how I spend my coin!

I actually cut out a lot yet this is still on the long side, so be warned. Sorry in advance.
SECTION ONE: ASSETS AND DEBT
Retirement Balance: ~$4,740. $4,450 in a Roth IRA I opened when I turned 26. I just recently started contributing more to it regularly. I was previously focused on building my emergency savings up. My last job didn’t offer retirement until the very end of my time there, and there was no employer match. I contributed the bare minimum to my 401k; it has about $300 in it. With my current job, retirement match is factored into the salary.
Equity: $0. Not a home owner.
Savings account balance: $15,765. $1,150 in a Chase savings account, $13,519 in a HYSA, $1,046 in my Qapital account. Technically I use Qapital to save for taxes, but I know I won’t owe anywhere close to $1,000 since my 2020 freelancing was infrequent. I doubt it’ll even be up to $250.
Checking account balance: $2,227 (payday was today!)
Credit card debt: $0. I use my credit card like a debit card so I can rack up cash back. I pay it off every day.
Student loan debt: $21,417. I graduated in 2015 with a BA in French and English. Original debt was ~$33,000. Before the pandemic my interest was 4.5%. Interest is now 0%.

SECTION TWO: INCOME PROGRESSION2015-2016 - $15/hr as a remote intern for a major website. This was my first paid position out of college. I learned a lot about web content and writing for online audiences. This was part-time at 25 hours a week.
2016 - $2,700/month as a Content Writer. I created scripts and training materials for various companies to train their employees. Started this job in March and was unexpectedly laid off in December. Sucked at the time but turns out it was a blessing in disguise...The work was soulless and I didn’t like it.
2017 - ~$850/month stipend as an Americorps VISTA. At the start of the year I got a Development position at a nonprofit I volunteered at, hoping to gain grant writing experience. I absolutely would NOT have done this had I not been living at home. I also collected an additional $400 a month in unemployment until July since I was technically a federal volunteer, not an employee, therefore still eligible for benefits.
2017 - $37,000/year as a Development Coordinator, primarily writing grants. The person in this position left and I was asked to step in. I didn’t get my ed stipend since I ended my VISTA year 5 months early.
2018 - $38,250/year - COL raise.
2019 - $43,000/year then $45,000. I was promoted to manager.
2020 - $47,000/year - COL raise.
2020 - $60,000/year. I had been job hunting hard when COVID hit and I subsequently became discouraged. I was desperate to leave my job...the people I worked with were wonderful but I felt like my growth was stifled, the amount of staff turnover was draining, and our pay was below market rate. I ended up finding my new job through my network. I was very excited to not work in fundraising anymore. The events of 2020 confirmed that I didn’t want to make a career out of coaxing rich white folks to relinquish a tiny amount of their wealth to support youth of color. My now-boss and I talked extensively over Zoom before I received my offer letter in July. It’s been a great learning opportunity, even though starting a new job remotely is strange and sometimes lonely. Having a cat helps :)
Main Job Monthly Take Home**:** $3,846. This is after $50 is deducted for Vision, Dental, Medical.
Side Gig Monthly Take Home: $100-$400. I write product guides for a website sometimes. These days I only take on work if I’m anticipating new expenses that month. This income is in addition to my 60k salary, since what I make from my side hustle varies. Last year I made $2,200, the year before it was over $5,000.
Other: ~$250/year in cash back from my credit card
--
SECTION THREE: EXPENSES
Rent: $1,025 in a decently-sized studio that I share with my cat. Rent encompasses all utilities, including internet. This is dropping down to $975 starting April 1 - yay!
Renters Insurance: $5
Savings (monthly unless it says otherwise): ~$300 goes into a High Yield Savings Account. I automate $50 a week then throw in an extra $100 - $200, depending on the month.
I save $80 - $120 with the Qapital app. I got it before they started charging so my account is free.
Retirement contribution: $315- $415 into a Roth IRA. Maybe I should up payments so I can max it out, really torn between that or boosting student loan payments. I throw an extra hundred dollars in there some months.
Debt payments: All I have is federal student loan debt. Since starting my job in July I’ve been paying $500/month, throwing in extra when I have it. I’m going to increase this to $600/month starting in February. Would love to have it paid off by the time I’m 30, or during my 30th year. I’m not holding my breath for student loan forgiveness, but if it starts to seem like a real possibility then I’ll cut back on payments.
Donations: $300 to my mom and dad. I come from a working-class background and make more than both parents combined. My dad was unemployed for a while, and as I write this has become unemployed again. I worry a lot about my folks financially. In our culture it’s expected that we take care of our parents as they age, so there’s that component too.
Also $25 to a local nonprofit. $9 to a local theater company for which I’m a board member. Our board is very low-key and not a fundraising one.
Then usually ~$500 more throughout the year for various causes.
Electric: Included in rent.
Wifi/Cable/Landline: Included in rent.
Cellphone: $43
Subscriptions: ~$63. $18 for Patreon, $10.89 for Spotify Premium, $16.34 for HBOMax, $7.62 for Disney+, $9.71 for Netflix.
Pet expenses: I spend roughly $80 on food + probiotics and $20 on litter, which I buy in bulk. The monthly amount really fluctuates though. I’ve spent about $1,500 on my cat since I adopted her in October. Including getting basic stuff like a litter box, a cat tree, toys, food/water bowls, a carrier, etc. along with the adoption fee. I took her to the vet earlier last month and that was $450. She was vomiting frequently :(
Car payment / insurance: $0. Car free, baby.
Therapy: $100
Paid hobbies: $120 annually for my personal website.

FINANCIAL BACKGROUND
Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes. I’m a child of immigrants and we place a high premium on education. Skipping college was never an option. Luckily, I’ve always done well in school and would have gone to college regardless. I think about grad school sometimes but there has to be a good ROI. Maybe one day. I borrowed 33k in student loans for undergrad, which isn’t that bad considering that I went to a private school that cost $200,000 over 4 years. I paid for the rest with work study, along with merit-based and need-based scholarships.
Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent/guardian(s) educate you about finances?
We didn’t discuss finances too often. I did get an allowance when I was younger and paid for the things I wanted (mostly books and CDs from my local Borders) by saving that money. My parents always had the mindset that credit cards can work as emergency funds...as an adult I strongly oppose that way of thinking. My parents accrued a lot of credit card debt and I never wanted that to be me. Which is why I only use my CC now as a debit card. I never put anything on there that I can’t pay off in full.
What was your first job and why did you get it?
I was in this program where teens get paid to participate in arts programs. I did theater for three years in HS, I think the stipend was ~$400 every two months. My first real job with wages was working retail the summer before college. I was making $8.25/hr. Both jobs were for spending money.
Did you worry about money growing up?
I didn’t worry necessarily, but I was aware that there were people with more than us. My mom was out of work for a few years due to some chronic pain and we had a Link card then. I had free/reduced lunch growing up and got fee waivers for all of my college apps. I was also aware of my privilege as an American citizen. My parents regularly sent money home to poorer family members. I learned early that it’s better to be working class here than it is over there.
Do you worry about money now?
Yes. I know I’m luckier than many. But I also have no generational wealth to inherit. Sometimes I feel really behind when I see people my age or younger with six figures in their retirement, $50,000 in stocks, or money passed down from family. I worry most about taking care of my parents in old age. I have an older brother so it’s a relief that we can at least share costs, when the time comes.
At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
I became 100% financially responsible when I moved out at age 25. Before then I was contributing $400/month towards rent. If I fell on really hard times I could probably move in with my folks, but otherwise I'm my own safety net.
Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
My mom cashed out an $800 savings bond for spending money when I studied abroad in college, but otherwise nope.
Day 1 - Wednesday
morning
Another dreary January day. It’s been consistently snowing for the past two days and very overcast to boot. I spend some time lazing in bed until my Mom unexpectedly calls to ask me if I can print out her worker’s comp form to see if she'll qualify for any. She contracted COVID from her job a few weeks ago and, thankfully, is recovering. I tell her I don’t have a printer and hang up, slightly annoyed, after telling her I’ll print it from the library later. This was the 4th day in a row of her calling me and conversations with her can be hard to cut short (I’m not an asshole, honest).
I get up and feed my cat, E., her breakfast with a probiotic, take my gummy vitamins, and get ready for the day (brush teeth, moisturize face and hair, put on black skinny jeans and a navy and white speckled sweater with hoop earrings). I throw some sliced bananas, kale, frozen blueberries, honey, almond milk, and ginger into the blender for a smoothie. Once that’s poured into a glass I take a seat at my corner desk to begin my work day.
Afternoon
My foul mood lingers but I work through it. There’s a big deadline coming up soon so my days have been pretty full. E. climbs into my lap while I work and I give her some head rubs. I adopted her 4 months ago. There was a learning curve for me, as someone who grew up with 0 pets, but E.’s made it very worthwhile. She only recently began to "loaf" in my lap and I love it, even during inopportune moments like Zoom meetings.
Lunchtime! Today it’s tomato basil soup I made over the weekend with open-faced grilled cheese on french bread. The bread is getting stale but it’s almost finished anyhow, and slathering it with cheese and butter works wonders. I put out the kitty’s lunch, too. E. eats some of it then jumps into my bed, curling up for a midday nap. Wish I could do the same. Sigh.
I buckle down and get back to work, now doing somewhat-tedious data entry. After about an hour and a half I decide to walk to the library to print my mom’s forms. I order a Toasted White Hot Chocolate with almond milk from Starbucks ($4.60) so I have something warm to drink on my walk. I’m not a coffee drinker because of my caffeine sensitivity. Sometimes even a mug of black tea will make me lightheaded if I drink it too fast!
Evening
Work day is over. I outline my to-do list for tomorrow and cross off the things I accomplished today. My Dad is downstairs to pick up the forms I printed for my mom. After dropping off the forms I change into comfy clothes and assign myself a freelance assignment. I’m applying for a weekend writing workshop next month that will cost $300. I may not get in, but in case I do, I want to be prepared! The fun thing about my freelancing is that I get to choose the topics I want to write about. I select an assignment on skincare products.
Time to make breakfast for dinner: smashed fingerling potatoes with sauteed bell pepper, red onion, and broccoli topped with a fried egg and half an avocado. Seasoned with Lawry's and drizzled with sriracha. I get cozy on my loveseat to eat dinner. I also send an email to a man I've been corresponding with daily, D, for the last month and a half. We met out of the blue on an online forum - not Reddit - and have been enjoying each other's online company :) I'm not rushing to label anything, especially since he lives a state away. We're just seeing where things go for now.
For the rest of the evening I read my book while E. sleeps curled up next to me and Wendy Williams plays on TV. Then I get into my nighttime routine: smoke from my one hitter, put on some music and hop in the shower, where I also wash my face. Out the shower, I lotion up with shea butter and rub a gentle toner on my face. I make a mental note to re-up on weed soon. It's taxed to hell (welcome to Cook County. They tax everything here) but at least it's stimulating the local economy. I floss and brush my teeth before getting under the covers.
TOTAL: $4.60
Day 2 - Thursday
Morning
My body naturally wakes me up around 7:30. I remain in bed, mostly browsing Reddit on my phone, before committing to getting out of bed. I feed E. her breakfast and daily probiotic, take gummy vitamins and clean the last of my dishes from the night before. The sun pours through my south-facing windows and my heart sings - yesss, let there be light! I brush my teeth, moisturize my hair with coconut oil and moisturize my face. I pick out a black ribbed turtleneck and black high-waist jeans to wear, but ultimately decide to rock my loungewear until I have to leave my apartment.
I make a smoothie with the other avocado half from last night, frozen mango chunks, the last of my frozen blueberries, ginger, almond milk, and honey. I highly recommend avocados in smoothies. The creamy texture is to die for! I log into my work email and have a couple fires to put out. While I work, I polish off the rest of my Vitner’s Crunchy Kurls. IYKYK. I also reply to my email from D. this morning. Yesterday we were both in bad moods but this morning we’re doing better, mood wise. We talk about how rough our Januaries were - with my mom recovering from COVID and his dad in the hospital since the beginning of the year - and how we deserve a nice treat for getting through the month. We agree that lifetime supplies of books (for me) and movies (for him) would be fitting.
afternoon
My morning was full speed ahead but things are slowing down so I pause to read a Money Diary on here. I so admire this diarist’s conviction in language learning/maintenance! My French is dans la poubelle because I haven’t kept up in a long time. For a while I’d do Duolingo, watch French-language movies and shows on Netflix, and book trips to Francophone cities so I could practice speaking (last trip was Montreal in December 2018). When COVID blows over I want to go to Martinique. I remind myself to check out some French-language films soon. I’m open to any recommendations, especially media that focuses on Francophones outside of France, or those from immigrant communities :)
I return to my data entry task. Giving away grants is fun. Tracking dollar amounts and grantee info with excel formulas, less so. I finish up the last of my soup and grilled cheese sandwich and give E. her lunch. I put on the student loan episode of Patriot Act as I eat. I’d truly be wowed if student loan forgiveness actually came to fruition. It’s either somewhat likely or not likely at all, depending on who you ask.
Post-lunch, I’m craving cupcakes bad. Did I mention I have an unrelenting sweet tooth? I look up cupcakes near me and mentally bribe myself with a cupcake order if I get my work done.
evening
My cupcake craving has subsided. I'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow. I normally eat dinner around 7 or 8pm but opt for an early dinner today: my leftover Mongolian Beef and peapod tips in garlic sauce, yum. I ordered Chinese takeout on Sunday. While my rice cooks, I bundle up for a trip to Walgreens. When I'm there I get a big thing of Dawn dish soap, some antibacterial wipes that are on sale, a bag of roasted cashews, a Reese's Fast Break bar, and a small bag of Pirate's Booty ($16.83).
By the time I get back my rice is nearly finished. My sink has some dirty dishes, so I wash those before reheating the Mongolian beef and peapod tips on my stove top. I'm one of those weirdos without a microwave… don't miss it at all though. I dig into my leftovers and reply to a message from D. which is quite imaginative. In the sexual sense ;) D. has a very sensual way with words and as a writer of course I'm into it. I go back for seconds, finishing the rest of my takeout leftovers. After dinner and some more reddit browsing I do my evening shower routine. At 10:30 pm my upstairs neighbor is annoyingly doing jumping jacks (that’s what it sounds like) or something that makes it very hard to focus. Ugh.
TOTAL: $16.83
DAY 3 - Friday
MorningI fell asleep unexpectedly and woke up around 2am. This kind of thing happens a lot. I guess my cat has adapted too, she’s always bugging me for food in the early morning hours. I feed my cat, brush my teeth, crawl back into bed and fall asleep an hour or so later.
I’m up again at 7:30, laying in bed before officially getting up. My mom calls me and I remember I promised to order her a Lyft to work. Her workplace has the COVID vaccine and she’s going to get the first dosage. She mentions that some symptoms are coming back - like shortness of breath, which she didn’t even have the first time - even though she’s been on the mend for the past week and just got the go-ahead from her doctor to work again. After I order my mom the Lyft ($31.46 incl. tip) I indulge in my nasty habit of googling medical stuff. I find an article about a woman who ended up in the hospital unexpectedly, 5 MONTHS after getting symptoms. Cue cortisol levels going up. I also have a work meeting this morning that I’m nervous about, having never led it alone before.
I get out of bed, feed my cat her breakfast + probiotic, take gummy vitamins, and get dressed with a black turtleneck, black jeans, and small hoop earrings. I try to breathe and remind myself that all will be fine. I have a habit of catastrophizing and generally thinking in worst-case scenarios, if that wasn’t already obvious. My meeting ends up going perfectly fine though, and my mom texts me later to say she took the train home (my Dad needed the car for work this morning). She is feeling fine for now. Since I skipped my morning smoothie I make one now with pear, kale, frozen strawberries, almond milk and honey. Eh, I’ve had better. But it’s drinkable.
afternoon
My morning flew! I’m running low on food so for lunch, I throw some crinkle cut fries in the oven. Grab an avocado, red onion, and a roma tomato from the fridge to make a quick guac. I also make a side of sriracha mayo.
Today is payday. It’s my rent paycheck so I’m not as excited tho. While my fries are in the oven I move some money to my Roth IRA. I watch one of my favorite Youtubers, King of Reads, while I eat my lunch. He has an interesting take on Gamestop Gate and basically says, abolish all this stock market shit. I do think there are a lot of evils in American capitalism, which was literally built off the backs of s colonized peoples. Like is this system even for us?
After lunch I get back to work. I also do something I seldom do: order groceries off Instacart. The anxiety of the day has drained me and I don’t feel like lugging a bunch of groceries home. Plus, the store I order from is cheaper than the one closest to me. I get some jasmine rice, a family pack of Nongshim ramen, green onions, carrots, zucchini, sirloin steak, ginger root, yellow onions, chili paste, bell peppers, white mushrooms, yellow squash, bok choy, kombucha, bamboo skewers, grape tomatoes, a bottle of Apothic Red and some hazelnut cookies. Add $10 for tip ($74.48). I do walk to the local grocery store anyway to 1) get some fresh air while it’s still daylight and 2) pick up smoothie ingredients. From there I get a big bag of frozen mixed berries, frozen mango chunks, an avocado, three bananas, almond milk, coconut sparkling water, and a sweet Belgian waffle ($18.15).
Evening
I knock out the last of my work tasks just in time for teletherapy at 5:10. I love my therapist. Been seeing her for going on three years and she’s changed my life. We talk and I feel lighter, remembering the progress I’ve made since I first walked into her office crying in 2018. After we hang up I get an email receipt for the cost, which is accounted for in monthly expenses. I put away my instacart delivery and message a bit more with D. Even though we’re just emailing, I truly enjoy his company. He makes me feel incredibly attractive and soft.
Glass of red wine in one hand, I play with E. for 15 minutes. Despite her age (over 10) she’s spry and will bug the hell out of me to indulge her. I spend the rest of the evening on the couch decompressing with my wine. I do my nightly shower routine but skip the weed because I know it'll make me fall asleep ASAP. Then I fry up the rest of my breakfast for dinner ingredients (minus avocado and egg) and eat them with sriracha.
TOTAL: $124.09
DAY 4 - Saturday
morning
Oops. Fell asleep and woke up at an odd hour. Again. Go brush my teeth and floss. My kitty is very awake and bugging me for attention so I smoke, play with her a bit, and go back to sleep.
Wake up a few hours later. I hear the unmistakable retching of my cat throwing up. Maybe she went too long without food...I mop up the small puddle with paper towels and spray my rug liberally with Nature's Miracle. When I feed E. her breakfast + probiotic she keeps it all down. I take gummy vitamins and get back into bed. From my phone, I go to my local dispensary's website to place an order for pick up, ultimately choosing a strain I've had before that's on sale. I log into my checking account to transfer money to my mom (accounted for in monthly expenses).
Actually get out of bed for real around 9:45am. Scoop E.’s litter box and prepare to get some freelance work done. I make a mango, pear and avocado smoothie with almond milk and honey and sit down to work. Girls plays in the background. I never watched this show when it was popular and was surprised by how funny it is (albeit problematic for a number of reasons).
Afternoon
Snack break! I brew some black tea and have it with the hazelnut cookies I got yesterday. 90 minutes later, once I’m two-thirds through my assignment, I make actual lunch: ramen noodles spruced up with minced garlic and ginger, scallion whites, bok choy, and mushrooms. All topped with scallion greens. Easy and d e l i c i o u s. There’s another snowstorm, urgh. I’m walking to pick up my weed and from my window, it doesn’t look too bad right now. Preorder a Honey Citrus Mint from Starbucks for the long walk ($3.27) and bundle up. It’s an hour round trip but I love walking and don’t really work out so...I take my exercise where I can get it. Stop by the ATM to withdraw cash for flower ($70). On my way back from picking up I indulge in a carrot cake slice from a popular bakery in the area. ($8.13 incl. tip). Okay, I’m set on sweets for awhile. For now :)
Evening
I finally wrap up my freelance assignment and share it with my editor. Shower time. Take a hit from my one hitter and do my nightly routine. Once finished, I change my mind on dinner. I’d originally planned to make a quick "bibimbap" (air quotes because it's very much a knock off) and even steamed rice ahead of time, but carrot cake is sounding good right now. Carrot cake it is! I have some more hazelnut cookies for a well-balanced meal. Give the kitty her dinner and fall asleep with the TV on.
TOTAL: $81.40
DAY 5 - Sunday
Morning
Woke up at an odd hour again. (around 4 am). E. is being a butt once again so I feed her an early breakfast with her probiotic. Brush my teeth, floss, and go back to sleep for a few hours. Get up and out of bed for real around 9:30 and clean up a bit, doing one load of laundry and vacuuming my rug and floors. I finally cook and eat the bibimbap meant for yesterday (minus the egg). I have a virtual date with a college friend I haven’t spoken to in a while, so we spend a few hours catching up! My friendship with her is ever-evolving. She was someone I put on a pedestal for a long time, until she disappointed me when I really needed her and hurt me deeply. I’ve worked to let go of that resentment and remind myself that 1) she is very much human, 2) she is not a better person than I am and 3) I can’t expect everyone to have the same heart that I have. Tough but necessary lessons to learn.
Afternoon
I really should deep clean E’s litter box today but ehhhh, not feeling it. I clean my bathtub, bathroom sink and mirror instead and wipe down some surfaces. I also sip some red wine blended with frozen strawberries (10/10, would recommend!) and start meal prepping for later. I’m making suya - West African meat skewers - so I thinly slice my sirloin steak while it’s semi-frozen and refrigerate the rest to fully defrost. I also chop up more garlic, ginger, bok choy, mushrooms, and scallions for ramen later. I know I’m going to get high very soon and won’t want to do too much, so I’m doing what future high-me will thank me for. Light an oudh incense stick, reply to a message from D., and submit my $250 invoice for freelance work. Put food out for E.
The snow is still pouring in from yesterday. Maybe we’ll get those 10 inches of snow after all. I smoke a bit and cook the same ramen as yesterday but add a fried egg and some sesame oil. I inhale the whole thing and drink all the broth, either it's really this amazing or I'm just stoned. For dessert, I brew black tea and have it with the rest of my hazelnut cookies.
evening
Shower routine time! As much as I hate cleaning the bathtub, that first shower afterwards is the best. Wash my hair with Aussie Moist conditioner (I keep my hair very short and cut it myself) and moisturize with copious coconut oil. Listen to one of my favorite podcasts while in the shower, Say Your Mind with Kelechi Okafor. I love listening to her and her brother’s banter, it feels like I'm among friends.
I've been eating throughout the day so I'm not too hungry come dinner time. I have some crinkle cut fries with sriracha mayo and crack open a kombucha. Rewatch more old episodes of Girls. Why is Adam Driver so attractive to me, even if his character on the show is awful (they're all awful, really)?
TOTAL: $0
Day 6 - Monday
morning
Odd sleep hours strike again! I should mention that I also brush my teeth while I’m in the shower, lest you think I brush once a day only :) Take gummy vitamins and give my nagging E. her early morning meal after playing with her a bit. Scroll on Reddit until I fall back asleep.
Get up and start the day for real at 8:40. Clean a few dirty dishes from last night and give E. breakfast, round #2 with her probiotic. Brush my teeth moisturize my hair, and choose an oatmeal, knee-length knit dress to wear with small hoop earrings. I make a smoothie with a navel orange, some frozen strawberries, frozen banana that I almost forgot about, and almond milk. It’s February now. Happy Black History/Present/Future Month. February is actually one of my least favorite months but after the January I’ve had, I’m ready to move on swiftly. E. is fascinated by all the snowblowing that our neighbors do outside the window. Chicago hasn’t been hit this hard with snow in 5 years - 9 inches!
This is a very slow morning, work wise. Snack on cashews. Work on some excel data and open a tab for Girl Scout Cookies. It’s that seasonnnn. Note that there’s a four box minimum to get cookies. I’ll save my cookie order for next week.
afternoon
The sunlight is giving me life today. I’m getting my Vitamin D through the window, though a walk to the beach sounds lovely. After doing a bit more work, it’s lunch time. I steam some jasmine rice and fry carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, bok choy, and scallion whites in soy sauce and chili paste for my knockoff bibimbap. With an egg this time. Then I decide to bundle up and walk to the beach for additional vitamin D. I only live five minutes away :) . The sand and shoreline are all covered in snow but peaceful nonetheless. I've actually never been to the beach in the dead of winter before. God, I love Lake Michigan. Never understood the hype around oceans, especially because you can't drink the water. Have my phone check in with my boss. Message a bit with D. and round up my tasks for the day.
evening
D. encouraged me to follow my impulses and order the greasy pizza I’m craving right now. But I have food in the fridge. Sigh. Cut up my veggies and season them for veggie kabobs to go with the suya, which has marinated in a spice rub. Put the veggies and meat on skewer sticks and put it all in the oven. It comes out…okay-ish. The meat is a bit overdone and not as flavorful as I'd hoped. Not terrible for a first try, I suppose. Eat two veggie kabobs and two suya sticks. Fall down the Reddit rabbithole for way too damn long. Also check on my mom and how she's doing. She said she's okay now, taking things one day at a time. Feed the kitty her dinner. Do my nighttime routine (including brushing my teeth) and snuggle in bed to watch more Girls. Snack on graham crackers since I have no other sweets or candy handy.
TOTAL: $0
Day 7 - Tuesday
morningMe and my fucked up sleep schedule. No judgment, plz. Wake up at an odd hour again, brush my teeth, feed the cat, smoke a bit, and go back asleep.
My mom calls me at 8 to tell me she might need me to call her a Lyft again - this is not a typical nor regular expense btw - because she has one of her work trainings and my Dad took the car for work. She asks if I still want to go to Nigeria this summer since she’s about to get tickets. IDK! I’m not comfortable traveling internationally...but my Nigerian passport also expires this year and it was a huge pain in the ass to get it in the first place. I enjoy visiting, though I always have a lot of personal shit to navigate while there. Being part of a diaspora is complicated.
Also wake up to a steamy message from D. Steamy enough for me to get myself off, truly the best way to start any morning. My period has started...fun. I was expecting it though. Feed E. her breakfast with a probiotic, take gummy vitamins, brush my teeth, moisturize hair, and get dressed in a grey turtleneck, black Adidas soccer pants, and gold hoop earrings. Blend frozen mango chunks, a small banana, greek yogurt and almond milk into a smoothie. I also brew a cup of lemon tea. Pop two ibuprofen and start my work day with a staff meeting.
afternoon
Light a candle and keep working! Ok, I actually break for a few YouTube videos, one from MelinaPendulum about the Sex And the City reboot. To sum it up: why do one?? What’s the point if Samantha isn’t even coming back? I put out E.’s lunch. I also steam some jasmine rice to eat with the suya and veggie kabobs from last night. Damn I wish I had some steak sauce. Oh well. Eat lunch and call a Lyft for my mom. ($25.99, incl. tip). Work with more Sex and the City in the background.
EveningThe work day has ended and I am desperately in need of snacks! I load $10 on my Starbucks app and then decide to not get anything. I planned to fuck up some hot chocolate but the way my cramps are fading and coming back, it’s best to stay away from a drink with 57 grams of sugar. Pick up some Lysol wipes, a bottle of club soda, Fig Newtons, Ritz Crackers to go with the block of cheese in my fridge, a Reese’s Fast Break bar, and some Haribo Happy Cola gummies. ($11.69)
Get home, pour a small glass of Apothic Red and play with E. for a little bit. Then go down another Reddit rabbithole before making my dinner - ramen, minus the egg. Still delicious! Message D. for a bit and do my shower routine. I did not read very much this week, maybe it’s a testament to me not liking my book that much? Hmmm....my neighbor starts his incredibly annoying exercise routine and I fall asleep waiting for it to stop.
TOTAL: $47.68
--
GRAND TOTAL = $274.60
Food + Drink = $133.37
Fun / Entertainment = $70
Home + Health = $13.78
Other = $57.45
All in all, this was an unsurprising week, especially since I’m already in the habit of tracking expenses daily. The two atypical things were the Lyft rides for my mom - an infrequent occurrence - and my weed purchase, which happens once monthly. I suppose I could have included that in my monthly expenses. Please don’t roast me for my sleep schedule! I know issa mess. Also, I feed my cat four times a day in case that’s unclear.
Edit: Any and every time I left my home I wore a mask and then washed my hands thoroughly upon return.

Descriptions

The first in a series of official collaborations, I'm proud to introduce to you Disappearing Act!
Disappearing Act
Blue Power OG x Wizard's Apprentice
50/50 Sativa/Indica
70-80 days from sprout
1.5-3 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect medium-sized plants with stout branches that reach up to the shoulders of the main cola. Extremely dense and frosty flowers that leave your fingers greasy with scents predominantly of old school blueberry, kush, and gas. If you've been lucky enough to grow the Blue Power OG from @RoninGarden then you know just how magical this cross will be!
With the absolute least amount of detail let me tell you a little bit about my friend Ronin, our past, and why you should be supporting this dude. First off, he does the real work and breeds fire autos, so let’s get that out of the way. This was the foundation of our friendship and our collaborative efforts.
Ronin was one of the first people from a grow forum that I had the opportunity to meet in real life. In 2015/16 I was misled (*conned) into moving from the east coast to Colorado by someone that I had trusted. To spare you the details, I was left homeless and broke in a small mountain town, I knew nothing but my grow equipment, genetics, station wagon, and dog. Ronin, being the genuinely good dude that he is, offered me room and space to grow so that I could get back on my feet. He also took in my dog as if it was his own, and she is forever grateful to him as well.
Eventually, I moved in with one of my best buddy’s in the whole world and things were great until we ran into some problems trying to switch the lease over from the previous tenant. At that point, we were faced with a major rent increase or eviction. We chopped the grow, cleaned up, and went our separate ways. With nowhere to go Ronin took me in once again. Not long after that, I decided to move back east to pursue a different opportunity.
Living back in Massachusetts things didn’t work out the way that I had wanted them to, then one day I get a call from the Colorado best buddy previously mentioned saying his roommate was moving out and that he had a really nice space for rent to live and grow. Perfect! This was around Thanksgiving of 2018 that I moved back out to Colorado and got all set up to rock. On New Year’s day, I found him passed away.
I was literally broken.
Up until this point I had been living off of my less than minimum wage salary from another company and working dead-end jobs to keep the lights on to keep moving projects forward. There is no money in doing the real work, which is why so few people actually do it. I had no money, nowhere to go, and no idea what I was going to do. I felt like quitting and walking away from everything.
Once again, Ronin took me in.
I have been homeless three times in my life. All three times Ronin has been there for me. If there was ever someone that I think deserves the support and spotlight for his auto breeding and general amazingness it is my friend, Ronin. Night Owl would not exist if it were not for both Ronin and Jason from Darkhorse telling me not to give up, and providing space for a down and out breeder with nothing in the world but his plants and his dog. I will always have love for and support these dudes and I wholeheartedly encourage you to do the same.
Sage Scout
Forum Stomper x Wizard’s Apprentice
60/40 Sativa/Indica
70-80 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Sage Scout has been on the to-do list since the F2 stage of Wizard’s Apprentice. I knew immediately that these two would pair exquisitely, and I’m proud to finally have enough available to share with you! Expect a medium to large frame plant, with side branches that can grow to be almost as tall as the main cola (and will most typically require staking during late flower). Dense clusters of OG/Cookie structured flowers cap off the top of each branch, with golfball-sized nugs running down towards the stalk. Another heavily trichome covered plant that will lend herself to all types of extraction, producing thick earthy and sage flavors that are more and more difficult to find these days, accompanied by a hit of sweet lime and fuel. The Wizard adds a good bit of stretch, more flowering sites, and some Sativa dominance to the Forum Stomper’s already impressive pedigree. You’ll definitely want to have carbon filters if you’re running her someplace that odor might be of concern. Oh, and double-bagging for road trips would be a safe bet.
Happy Holidays everyone!
Mango Isle *PREMIUM MEMBERS ONLY* NEXT YEAR
Mango Smile x Zamaldelica Express
75/25 Sativa/Indica
80-90 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect large, easy growing plants, and ample satellite branching with elongated colas filling their top halves. This true tropical F1 hybrid will transport you to sunny days on beaches far away, leaving you uplifted, clear-headed, and relaxed without sacrificing motivation. Flavors range from citrusy mango to blue and red berries with an exotic alcohol in the background. She is sure to please the Sativa lovers in your life and is definitely one to have around for the private reserve jars. The official release will be sometime in 2021, but here is the sneak peek exclusively for you guys. Thank you for your support!

What to expect:From cosmic queen and some one offs with her, to Tyrone Stomper F6 and everything in between. Lots of fun alien and chem crosses as well. Probably about 40 different varieties total, lots of one offs that did not yield enough seeds to make an official release. Lots of fire to be found, for sure!

Halloween Leftovers

Spotless Mind
Fugue State x Cosmic Queen
True F1 Hybrid Limited Edition
75/25 Sativa/Indica
75-85 days from sprout
2-4 ounces average
3 Feminized Seeds
Large, easy growing sativa dominant plants with heavy branching and intense crystal production. Super sweet, peppery, and buttery flavors accompany an intensely uplifting head high and an electrically charged body feel. The Spotless Mind name gives a tip of the cap to the Amnesia Haze in her heritage, which carries through to this cross. Overindulge and you will find yourself becoming forgetful and may experience recollection difficulties, but in a fun way. She has also been known to encourage bedroom activities, making for a nice nightstand stash. If you are looking for an anytime sativa that won’t make your mind race aimlessly, look no further. The same reversal that was used for Galaxy Brain and Cosmic Apprentice was also used for this Limited Edition.
Milk and Qookies
Forum Stomper x Cosmic Queen F4 *Quick Finish*
60/40 Sativa/Indica
65-75 days from sprout
1.5-3 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect medium-sized bushes with stout branches that reach up and form a canopy surrounding the main cola. Incredibly resinous chunky white nugs and dark forest green foliage fade to the deepest purples and blacks under cooler temperatures. She will have true F1 hybrid vigor and produce a delicious mix of forum cookies and cosmic cream flavors along with an abundance of “fall off the stalk” gland heads that will put everything else around your trimbin to shame. Effects are stoney, both physically and mentally, without the couchlock. She could easily fill the role of all day/everyday smoke if you have a decent tolerance already. For the reversal I used a stocky, faster finishing Cosmic Queen as the pollen donor which will help add vigor and potency while keeping the stretch down.
Mango Sunrise *limited stock\*
Mango Smile x Cosmic Queen F4 *Super Sativa*
70/30 Sativa/Indica
75-85 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect large, easy growing plants with sturdy branching and individual bud sites running their length, met with a small cola cluster at their end. This true F1 hybrid has beautiful tropical citrus flavors that will send you off on an island vacation, while the effects will leave you physically and mentally heightened and ready for anything the day throws your way! Extremely pleasant all day/everyday smoke, sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The Cosmic Queen reversal used for this cross was what I consider the super sativa expression of CQ. Tall, stretchy, thinner leaves, incredibly sweet resin, bag appeal, pest, and pm resistant with an elongated bud structure that is excellent for outdoors and in. Don’t miss out!

2021 is Auxly’s year! Here’s what to expect.

There is so much to look forward to this year! Don’t let the day to day share price get to you! We know what Auxly got going on. Fundamentals will take the share price to levels we have never seen before. Personally, I think any share price dip from now until Q1 / Q2 earnings is a buying opportunity.
Here are a few things I’m speculating on but is not far from reality:
Sunens to produce high quality organic cannabis below $1 per gram. Significantly reducing 2.0 input costs. Mass produce a variety of strains simultaneously and with incredible consistency. Auxly can compete in all tiers without crushing their margins.
Robinsons high-potency pre-rolls. Robinsons outdoor grow comes online. High CBD hemp production for Dosecann wellness product line.
Kolab Project introduces a new vape kit with cart specific settings. More collaborative efforts with notable craft growers and retailers.
Foray tinctures and new products to test the market such as cookies, lollipops, chewables and beverages. Offerings for medical patients.
Back Forty will dominate the value segment. High quality dried flower in 28g offerings. Pre-rolls in multi-strain packs.
Dosecann introduces wellness products such as topicals, lip balm, aromas and bath bombs. Adds new partners to their white label platform.
The possibilities seem endless. Auxly has created a vertically integrated business that produces high quality products with excellent margins. They will squeeze out the low quality brands over time. People will transition from the “I want to explore different cannabis products” phase to the “I buy only products from this brand” phase and Auxly has a brand to satisfy every consumer preference. 2021 is the year Auxly will really grow into the company they aspired to become.
Feel free to add your product speculation in the comments. If you have a good idea I’ll send an email to Auxly.

The owners of the resort I'm staying at have coins for eyes - Part Five

Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
The escalator seemed endless and my legs screamed at the strain of running up the steep incline for so long. Looking behind me, my stomach swooped, feeling a wave of vertigo. The bottom looked miles away. If I slipped, I’d break my neck. As we ran on, I slowly began to question why we were running in the first place. Was a shop going to close soon? Was there a sale on? Were we going to miss a bus? I could hear faint music and the patter of water. Finally, heaving for breath, we reached the top. We were in front of a large fountain and music was playing. Darius perked up at the sound of it.
“That’s a Jimi Hendrix song,” he said. “The Wind Cries Mary.”
Someone was flying around the ceiling, diving through the spouting water. A small man with slicked back hair, wearing a loud gold suit, laughing as he flew around to the music. He seemed familiar. The neon lights made the water flash in different colours. He pushed his hand forward, manipulating the air to make the fountain pulse and warp in different interesting shapes and motions. People were standing and sitting around the fountain, watching as they sipped from drinks and ate snacks. He flew and spun and danced in mid-air, making the water twirl with him with a flick of his hands.
The song wasn’t coming from the intercom. A man with spiky green hair was sitting in the doorway of a music store, with a record player attached to speakers, nodding and smiling along.
“There was a girl with us before, wasn’t there?” asked Darius. “Or maybe I’m thinking of something else.”
I shrugged. There was a stall down the corridor, in between the music shop and a video arcade. I approached it, seeing it was serving boba tea. I looked at the fridges full of drinks and opened up one of the doors, picking the cookies and cream flavour. I got a straw from the counter and stuck it through the plastic top.
Darius had taken a seat at a bench, watching the flying fountain man. I joined him, taking a sip. In the back of my mind I felt an uncomfortable itch as though I were forgetting something. I was probably supposed to buy something at the shops and couldn’t remember what. It didn’t matter. I’d remember it later.
The drink was delicious and I passed it to Darius to try. He took a sip and his eyes widened, making an appreciative sound. We shared the drink between us, passing it back and forth as we watched the people run around and play in the arcade. We’d never much been into video games ourselves.
The flying fountain man suddenly screamed and flew off over our heads and down the corridor. We looked up, seeing everyone scatter in different directions, running for safety. Through the fountain, a head was emerging, eyes rolled back, surrounded by tons of wet blonde hair. It was floating straight for us. We were frozen in place as the disembodied head grew closer, the soggy slop of its hair dragging against the floor. It stopped in front of us, the stench of seaweed and foul water so strong I thought I’d choke on it.
“I’m sorry,” she said in a high, girlish voice. “I didn’t mean to scare you. My name’s Lola.”
I blinked.
“What?” said Darius, completely flabbergasted.
“Sorry it looked like I was attacking you, I just wanted to take the key from you before Regina swooped,” she explained. “I thought you’d just found the key and picked it up out of curiosity and didn’t know how dangerous it was. Carrying that key puts a target on your head and I wanted to protect you. Throwing the dog was a mistake.”
Darius and I exchanged confused looks. Then the memory came back to me.
“Baba Lennox told us that the key unlocks the dragon door which will get us out,” I said and Lola smiled, her head nodding up and down.
“I can help if you ever run into the brothers and Regina again,” she said. “Do you have any kind of container?”
We felt around and Darius got his Russian nesting doll from his pocket, opening it up and pulling the smaller ones out.
“Perfect,” said Lola. Suddenly her hair started making that uncanny whirling sound like a tape being rewound. The tendrils of hair started to wrap around her hanging head, faster and faster until her face was covered. The wrapped head began rocking rapidly from side to side as the hair started squeezing and compressing her skull, making it smaller and smaller. Then when she had compacted herself to around the size of an apricot she whizzed into the open Russian doll.
Darius closed the top and then shook his head, looking dazed. I felt the same. Everything in The Plastic Flower was just utterly mad. You’d think I’d be used to it by now but it still made my head hurt trying to keep up with it all.
“So she was alright all along,” Darius said to me. “Maybe the other scary freaks around here are alright too.”
“Yeah, I bet the hair munching, period drinking brothers are actually a lovely pair,” I replied. We stood up.
“I keep forgetting,” I muttered. “Find the dragon door. There’s got to be a way to not get sucked in to the brain fog.”
Darius threw up his hands.
“I don’t know,” he said. “This is all just too goddamn crazy. I can’t think straight.”
He looked at the Russian nesting doll and shuddered, throwing it into my hands.
“I don’t care if she’s nice,” he said. “Lola’s creepy.”
So much for the horror film fan. Nonetheless, I tucked the Russian doll full of hair into my dressing gown pocket along with my toy crocodile.
In the distance we could hear a whispering sound. Two pairs of silver eyes flashed ahead. We ducked under the counter of the boba cup store to hide.
“Stupid assholes, stupid assholes, stupid assholes,” Bloody Bones was murmuring under his breath as he slunk down across the floor, Rawhead waddling next to him. Bloody Bones paused and stared into the arcade, which had gone dead quiet.
“Stupid assholes,” he said again before continuing walking.
Bloody Bones was strangely funny. Always so outraged at everything in a ridiculously over the top way that was terrifying yet amusing. I felt like crying and laughing at the same time. Not like his brother, Rawhead who was just a grotesque nightmare.
“Sick of this, sick of it,” Bloody Bones was hissing to his brother. “Why can’t we just do it the old way, it better, it better. No. We have to do it her way, her dumb stupid way that is stupid.”
Rawhead just made a gargling sound, He started hacking and heaving as Bloody Bones ignored him, still grumbling to himself. The short fat man spat up a wad of tangled hair, stuck together with gooey phlegm. Leaning down, he picked it up off the floor and popped it back in his mouth again, starting to chew wetly.
When their footsteps seemed faint, we peered over the counter top. The brothers were gone. The sounds of the arcade started up again. They were all laughing and chattering acting as though nothing had happened. I looked over at the music store. The green haired man was standing in the doorway with a frown on his face. When he spotted us, he smiled.
“Yo!” he said, waving at us. “You’re new!”
We moved closer.
“My name’s Milo,” he said giving us a hand to shake. “My kid’s running around here somewhere, we call him Cherry cause he drinks Cherry Coke by the gallon he’s got it in his veins instead of blood.”
He said it in a joking way but The Plastic Flower was so strange it could have been true for all I knew.
“So you must like a glass of milo then?” I said and the man grinned.
“Sure do sister!” he said. “Come in and have a look around. It’s grouse in here.”
Inside the shop, were rows upon rows of CDS, cassette tapes and records with guitars and keyboards against the wall. Cherry stuck his head up from under the counter. He was younger than us, about ten and freckled, with a beanie over his long hair. He waved, sipping from a can of cherry coke. Darius immediately bolted around the place, picking things up and making excited sounds. It was his idea of heaven.
Milo ran a finger through the tops of the records.
“Wanna listen to anything?” he asked me. I shrugged.
“My brother’s more into music then me,” I said. I was reminded again of how fascinating everyone I met in this place was compared to myself. There wasn’t really any store here that had grabbed my interest cause I just wasn’t an interesting person. The only thing that had grabbed my attention was the Lady Calyptra’s potions and that was only because it could change me from a dull blank space to someone worth paying attention to.
“What’s your favourite?” I asked Milo. “Play that.”
The man grinned.
“Oh there’s too many, that’s like choosing your favourite child,” he said.
“I’m your only child,” Cherry said from the counter and Milo laughed.
“True that,” he replied. “I’m a DJ, I’ve been collecting all this stuff for years. I’m trying to find something I haven’t listened to.”
Darius paused in his happy exploring. He looked around at the store bursting to the seams with CDs, cassettes and vinyl's. You’d think he’d be delighted to find another person with the same interests as him but instead a sullen expression was growing across his face. Milo clearly knew more about music then Darius and that was a terrible thing. He had to be the expert in the room and now he wasn’t anymore.
There was a muttering sound and footsteps in the corridor. My stomach did an unpleasant jump. Bloody Bones was lurching down the floor again, without his brother, alone now. Was he going to be patrolling the corridor all day like a hungry watchdog? All day? Was it day? Was it night? How long had we been here for?
“Oi you!” Milo shouted and Bloody Bones whipped around, face twisted up in a feral snarl. I shrunk back with fear. What the hell was he doing trying to actually talk to him?
“What, what, what?” he screeched back.
“Why the period blood dude?” Milo said. “Fuckin’ weird? What’s wrong with regular blood?”
Suddenly Bloody Bones was lunging towards us as Milo laughed and pressed a button on the wall. A plastic screen began to roll down over the entrance. Bloody Bones crashed against the barrier just as it closed shut, his breath leaving behind a fog of brownish residue
“It taste better, it taste better, it just taste better!” he screamed. “You mock me? You dare? Nasty little thing! Make me sick!”
Darius and I backed away, clutching at each other.
“Great job Dad,” snapped Cherry. “He’s gonna be yelling at us all day now.”
Milo laughed even harder.
“I know, it’s hilarious,” he said. “Look at the little freak go.”
Bloody Bones started jabbing his finger at us and screaming, spraying the plastic with spit.
“I don’t like you! I don’t like any of you! Fuck you! Fuck all of you!”
“Oh what language,” Milo replied in a fake posh voice like he was a horrified old lady.
Bloody Bones let out a scream so high-pitched I thought my eardrums would burst. Darius and I covered our ears, cringing.
“You are shifty little vermins, vile varmints, make me vomit!” he squawked. “We give you everything and you steal! You steal, you steal you stealers you!”
“You steal fizzy lifting drinks!” said Milo and Cherry burst out into laughter despite himself. The man just stared contemptuously at the spitting, hissing creature like it was a child throwing a temper tantrum.
“I’m sick of this fool,” Milo said and flexed his palms. Outside the door, there was a whirling sound like a firework being unleashed. Cherry put his hands over his ears.
A ball of fire exploded down the hall and we threw ourselves onto the floor in terror. Bloody Bones screeched one last time and bolted with his arms over his head. Whistling to himself, Milo went over and pressed the button to make the screen roll up again.
The two of us just lay on the floor together. I started to think that maybe this was how the brain fog worked. We were being constantly bombarded with such bizarre events, combined with the sensory overload of sounds, sights and smells that our minds just went blank, unable to process it all.
Darius grabbed my arm.
“Look,” he said in a hoarse voice. I turned to where he was staring. Dancing over the ceiling was the familiar painting of the Japanese dragon. Maybe before I would have felt a burst of excitement at the sight of it. Now I just felt numb. We got to our feet together and started walking for the door.
“Chase that dragon, little dudes,” said Milo with a grin as Cherry waved. We just looked at them blankly as we staggered off.
The sounds of the arcade, whirling, buzzing, ringing and the manic laughter of the people inside rang in our ears. In front of us was a large screen hanging from the ceiling and a slightly familiar petite woman with dark hair and doe-eyes was dancing across it, figure blown up so she towered above us.
“Dance, dance, go on and get it and move it and groove it and lose your minds, yeah, yeah!” she was singing as she kicked her legs in the air, screen going through every cheesy effect in the book, from a mirrored image, to multiple dancing copies, to a star wipe and a love heart transition.
Beyond the screen the hall split, one side disappearing into darkness, the other opening up into an entrance to a cinema complex, with a lolly bar and popcorn machine inside. My twin lifted up his arm, pointing wordlessly. Down the cinema corridor was a dancing red dragon, leaping and twisting down the walls. We went after it in silence. The corridor was wide with sticky carpet, the lit up numbers of each cinema glaring out at us. The dragon slithered through one at the very end of the hall.
As we entered the cinema, a man in the middle row looked around at us. I felt a strange stirring in my chest. He was wrinkled and frail looking with wild grey hair and round glasses. His shirt was dotted with red stains and he had what looked like insect bites all over his cheeks, chin and neck. He smiled and beckoned us over.
We took seats on either side of him.
“G’day,” he said, offering us a big carton full of popcorn. “My name’s Lennox, but you can call me Baba.”
On the cinema screen was a vast rugged plain of grass, white rock and sand, the sound of heavy breathing mixed up with walking feet crunching against the ground. In the distance was a house, small and wooden. The door opened and a tiny shape started jumping up and down and waving, calling out something I couldn’t hear.
“I love this film,” said Darius, grabbing a handful of popcorn. “Very underrated, not many people have heard of it, but it’s really good.”
The man snorted with laughter, shaking his head.
“You haven’t seen this,” he said. Darius looked at him, affronted.
“I have!” he protested. “I’m a huge film buff I’ve seen way more films then anyone my age…”
“You haven’t seen this, because it isn’t a film,” Baba Lennox said. “It’s one of my memories.”
That struck Darius silent. I saw a flush rising on his cheeks, a mortified expression growing on his face. I turned back to the screen. The house was closer now and I could see the tiny figure was an excited toddler, babbling in a language I couldn’t understand. I caught a few words;
“Baba! Baba!”
The film went black. Then it faded back in again, over a stove top with a sizzling pan full of blueberry pancakes. A woman’s voice was singing quietly in the background as the pan was jostled, flipping the pancakes around in the bubbling butter. Then the scene abruptly changed to a young woman in a colourful dress and headscarf who was helping the toddler eat their plate of cut up pancakes doused in syrup.
“How do you choose a movie to watch?” asked Darius. At his words, a textbox popped up on the screen. As though it was listening to us.
“Would you like to re-watch the last film you viewed?” the letters proclaimed. A movie poster of Pete’s Dragon showed beneath the text. Baba Lennox let out another bark of laughter. Darius sunk into his seat.
“I wasn’t watching that, it must’ve made a mistake, that’s so babyish, I was like getting into really unknown underground stuff…”
Baba Lennox flapped a hand at him.
“You want to watch it?” he said.
Darius just murmured under his breath.
“Speak up son,” the man said. After a brief silence Darius muttered out, ‘yeah.’
“Let’s watch Pete’s Dragon then,” said Baba Lennox, clapping his hands together at the screen.
As the film began, I noticed something by the glowing green neon of the exit sign. A Japanese dragon was swirling up and down the wall and then over the door. It was like a painting had been enchanted and brought to life. It stirred something in my chest. I looked down at the toy crocodile squashed into my dressing gown pocket.
Getting to my feet, I followed the dancing creature out of the emergency exit. Baba Lennox and Darius didn’t even notice, too enwrapped in the film. I left them both behind.

Questions about plants being shocked / going back into vegging / not producing buds anymore.

Okay so I have a strain of Blueberry that I grabbed as a clone. The guy I grabbed it from said he is phasing it out because it takes too long to take off and it takes a long time to flower.
Now I have vegged this clone for 2 months 1 week before flipping over to flower 5 weeks ago.
I have it in a tent with Bruce banner, Moby dick, Bubba Kush and Peyote cookie. All of the other ones are producing fat colas and some of them are as big as a lighter already. All of them are getting bigger and thicker.
The Blueberry had an issue with white powdery mildew and I would say 1.5-2 weeks ago I had to chop out at least 15-20% of the inside of the plant to get more airflow in there. Some of what I chopped were stems that lead to colas with small pea sized buds forming at the top. I knew it would slow down its growth for a while but 1.5-2 weeks later I haven't noticed any growth in that plant. I don't see the colas/bud getting bigger at all. I don't see new growth either so I assume it hasn't gone back into vegging but I think it was shocked so much that it just stopped flowering at that point and it's done for.
Now I was gifted a mother Bruce banner that is basically 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide and I could fill in the tent with that if I got the Blueberry out of there but my questions are:
Will the blueberry start flowering again after a point when the shock wears off
Or will it stay as pea sized buds and is it basically garbage? I can still chop off the pea sized buds for some personal smoke before the rest of my crop is done but if it will go back to producing buds I want to keep it as I have probably 25-30 bud sites on that plant and it could produce a nice yield if it hurries back into producing flower.
Thanks reddit.

That struck Darius silent. I saw a flush rising on his cheeks, a mortified expression growing on his face. I turned back to the screen. The house was closer now and I could see the tiny figure was an excited toddler, babbling in a language I couldn’t understand. I caught a few words;
“Baba!

Descriptions (Quick Description from Daz)

Limited Edition:

Galaxy Brain 1:30:00

Zamaldelica Express x Cosmic Queen
75/25 Sativa/Indica
75-80 days from sprout
A long time coming, the Galaxy Brain is finally here! These large, branchy plants are covered with frost from the stems up! Piercingly sweet fruit scents and mouth coating flavors accompany a soaring euphoric head high, along with a relaxing body effect that doesn’t hamper your daily activities. I’m expecting this one to become a staple in the autoflower connoisseur’s garden. The reversal used was selected from over 40 Cosmic Queens and was extremely sativa dominant. I used this same expression for an unreleased seed run a few years back and she produced some of the most exquisitely beautiful and flavorful flowers. The female used was extremely pungent, with sappy and bulbous resin heads that stink up the whole room when burst. She also had extremely fat calyxes, providing massive amounts of surface area for the resin heads to call home.

Spotless Mind 1:39:00

Secret Owl Society:

Electric Qoolaid 1:32:18

Blue Microverse F4 x Cosmic Queen F4 *Quick Finish*
50/50 Sativa/Indica
65-75 days from sprout
1.5-3 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect medium to large plants with creamy blue raspberry lemonade golf ball buds running along the side branches, leading up to chunky top colas all wrapped in gooey, long-stemmed trichomes. Another beautiful true F1 hybrid with a 50/50 blend for a balanced, comforting mind and body experience. Great for relaxing after work when you’re ready to start winding down. For the reversal I used a stocky, faster finishing Cosmic Queen as the pollen donor which will help add vigor and potency while keeping the stretch down.
**Be sure to keep airflow and humidity in check during the final few weeks, as the flower density can lead to bud rot in the wrong conditions. **

Judy Gemstone 1:32:44

Strawberry Nuggets F4 x Cosmic Queen F4 *Quick Finish*
40/60 Sativa/Indica
65-75 days from sprout
1.5-3 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect medium-sized bushes with very sturdy branches that reach up and fill the canopy alongside the main cola. Rock hard nugs of pinks, purples, emerald, and blue hues will create all the bag appeal you could ask for, with a sweet cheesy strawberry funk that will have you smelling the bag again and again. Another true F1 and the heaviest indica hybrid of the lot, ranging from therapeutic to narcotic depending on your intake. Perfect for a dessert smoke or nightcap to relax your body before sailing off into the dream world. For the reversal I used a stocky, faster finishing Cosmic Queen as the pollen donor which will help add vigor and potency while keeping the stretch down.
***Be sure to keep an eye on these during early as the Strawberry Nuggets line can throw a ball or two during sexing, right where the side branches meet the main stem. It is rare, but can be brought about by stress or too strong an application of nutes during the sexing stage and seems to be most common when using humic acid. If you do see a ball pop up it can be removed and the plant will continue on fully female to finish her life. Also, keep airflow and humidity in check during the final few weeks, as the flower density can lead to bud rot in the wrong conditions. **\*

Karmic Connection 1:33:03

(Chem City Blues x Chemdogging) X Cosmic Queen F4 *Super Sativa*
60/40 Sativa/Indica
75-85 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect large, easy growing plants with satellite branches that reach up to the shoulders of the canopy, but be sure to stake her before she goes too far into flower or she will buckle under the weight of her blooms. The piercing old school perfumes she puts off range from skunky blueberries to creamy chems, and her soda can cola structure is sure to impress! This F1 polyhybrid is recommended for heavier smokers and those looking for help with pain management, and can be a bit too much too fast for the uninitiated. Carbon filters are always a must indoors, and best to make sure they’re in proper working order before running these.

Mango Sunrise 1:34:28

Mango Smile x Cosmic Queen F4 *Super Sativa*
70/30 Sativa/Indica
75-85 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average

Extremely pleasant all day/everyday smoke, sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The Cosmic Queen reversal used for this cross was what I consider the super sativa expression of CQ. Tall, stretchy, thinner leaves, incredibly sweet resin, bag appeal, pest, and pm resistant with an elongated bud structure that is excellent for outdoors and in. Don’t miss out!

Milk and Qookies 1:35:15

Space Station Orange v.2 1:36:50

Super Orange Haze F4 X Cosmic Queen F4 *Super Sativa*
70/30 Sativa/Indica

Floral and sour citrus flavors with an uplifting effect that is great for early morning and afternoon indulgences. Bag appeal is also of no concern, as this true F1 hybrid has it in spades!

Expect medium-sized bushes with stout branches that almost reach the height of the main cola. Extremely dense buds covered in sweet bakery and candy-flavored resin that will leave you wanting more. Cooler temperatures can bring out some beautiful fall colors that only add to her visual appeal. Stoney without the narcotic effect, great for an afternoon delight or as a post-meal treat. For the reversal I used a stocky, faster finishing Cosmic Queen as the pollen donor which will help add vigor and potency to this true F1, while keeping the stretch down.
***Be sure to keep an eye on these during early as the Toof Decay line can throw a ball or two during sexing, right where the side branches meet the main stem. **\*

Creme de la Soul F1 x Cosmic Queen F4 Quick Finish
50/50 Sativa/Indica
65-75 days from sprout
1.5-3 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect medium plants with stout satellite branches reaching up to the shoulders of the main colas. Dense nugs covered in oily resin ranging in smells from red berries and sneakers to creamy grapes, this F1 polyhybrid has a lot to offer! Cooler temperatures can bring on fades of reds and purples, making her an absolute beauty in her final days. She has a balanced physical and mental high, leaning towards the stoney end of the spectrum, and will make for a great evening smoke. For the reversal I used a stocky, faster finishing Cosmic Queen as the pollen donor which will help add vigor and potency while keeping the stretch down.
Be sure to keep airflow and humidity in check during the final few weeks, as the flower density can lead to bud rot.

Shekinah 1:40:55

Supernatural OG x Cosmic Queen F4 Super Sativa
70/30 Sativa/Indica
75-85 days from sprout
2-4 ounce average
3 Feminized Seeds
Expect large, easy growing plants with sturdy branching and individual bud sites running their length, met with a medium cola cluster at their ends, with a large main cola. This F1 poly hybrid is chock full of hazey goodness! Flavors range from effervescent lemon-lime, to heavy juniper laced gin and tonic. The juniper flavors are my personal favorite and tend to kick my ass and get me super stoney, while the citrusy ones are more motivational. There’s a variety of outstanding expressions to be found in these, all on the sativa end of the spectrum. The Cosmic Queen reversal used for this cross was what I consider the super sativa expression of CQ. Tall, stretchy, thinner leaves, incredibly sweet resin, bag appeal, pest and pm resistant with an elongated bud structure that is excellent for outdoors and in. Don’t miss out!

My PA MMJ Tier List from my experience in the program so far.

PA MMJ Tier List
Please note: This tier list is not exhaustive, it only lists strains that I have actually tried so far in the program. I did not include blends (at least not to my knowledge) because I believe that the strains themselves will probably be more consistent. Also, obviously everyone is different and that’s fine, your personal opinions are not invalid. I have my card for dealing with chronic pain and anxiety issues. Unless otherwise noted, the strain was tried in dry flower form out of a Dynavap Omni XL, which I also use with a Dynacoil for concentrates. I have a stressful professional job that requires me to think, so understand that I value clearheadedness over other effects, especially in the case of sativas. I am a 33 year old white man in decent shape (by which I mean a BMI lower than 25) if that matters to you.
SS Tier: WEED OF THE GODS: Always buy the limit if you can, also worth driving long distances for.
Moonshine Haze by Terrapin, Sativa- the perfect wake and bake. Tastes great, like really good smelling wood, amazing value at $35 an eighth, and gives me clear headed energy and pain relief to attack the day. As a bonus, it suppresses my appetite, which means I can work without distraction. This strain usually comes in around 16-17% THCA, which seems low in the program, but that’s absolutely plenty in this case for whatever reason. Please note, the flower I bought looked like absolute shit. I wonder how good this strain could be if the grower actually gave the plant some tender loving care?
Sour Blueberry #2 (Diesel Pheno) by Prime Wellness, Hybrid - the perfectly balanced hybrid. It’s great for unwinding after a long day of work. Relaxing, but not overly so and still gives amazing cerebral effects while making social interaction effortless. If I have too much the walls look like they are breathing, but I don’t get anxious or anything. I can still work on this as well if I need to. Amazing for running. Tastes and smells great, with a surprising amount of blueberry flavor for it being the Diesel phenotype.
Kimbo Kush by Gleaf, Indica (possibly listed as a hybrid) - this one will knock me directly out. I only break this out if I’m having a lot of trouble sleeping. Taste is very earthy, which is really the only part I don’t particularly like about it, but it’s not a huge deal for me. The pain and anxiety relief is amazing though. I feel like my mother is tucking me in after a long day of playing with my childhood friends in an era before I began to deal with chronic pain, safe and sound.
S Tier: Excellent weed, a must buy.
African Thai #15 by Prime Wellness, Sativa - another amazing sativa, but it’s a little too easy to have too much. When I do have too much, it can get a little racy and stoke my anxiety. That’s the only reason it didn’t make it to SS tier, it’s still an amazing buy if you see it at any dispensary. Taste is peppery, which is very nice. Caution: This strain has tons of myrcene in it and it does have a sleepy crash for me, especially if I use it multiple times in a day.
707 Headband by Cresco, Indica (Only had vape cartridge and concentrate)- This strain is more like a hybrid. Great for pain flair-ups. I especially like it for bad headaches. I can also still kind of work on it, if I don’t overindulge. Taste is like diesel fuel, and it’s nice.
Golden Goat by GTI, Sativa - It’s absolutely fantastic, but like Prime’s African Thai, maybe a little too easy to have too much. This is best used for hiking, as it really motivates me to move around. If I am in a situation where I have to sit still, I reach for something else. Taste is peppery, but is very distinct from African Thai #15's peppery taste and it’s easy to tell that it’s Golden Goat from its unique smell alone (think pepper + someone’s sweaty armpit).
OG 18 by Cresco, Indica - It will knock me out, and it has tons of alpha and beta pinene in it which always gives me tingles, which I personally think mesh well with the relaxation. Not as good as Kimbo Kush overall, but still a fantastic option that in my opinion tastes better. Tastes a bit like a pine tree, which despite loving pinene for the effects it gives I’m not that big of a fan of, but still better than earthy flavors for me.
Bio Jesus by Cresco, Indica (only had the cart)- Get ready for bed, brother. Tastes like fuel. Incredibly relaxing, sends me straight to bed pain free, amazing night time cart.
Blueberry Spacecake by Cresco, Indica (only had cart + concentrate) - Cresco’s reserve line is pricey, and that’s what demoted this strain from SS to S. Otherwise it’s an absolutely fantastic night time strain that still has nice cerebral effects with a great (sort of moldy) blueberry flavor. It’s not quite as sleepy as Kimbo Kush though, so I can still enjoy a TV show or two while getting ready for bed. I ration this strain carefully.
A Tier: Great weed, a must try.
Arch Angel by Farmaceutical RX, Hybrid (only had concentrate) - Decent clearheaded pain relief. One of the few hybrids I can consistently get a lot of work done on. Does sap your energy a bit though, and it’s on the pricey side. Taste is almost nonexistent in the concentrate I had, like a hot gluey mist that vaguely tastes like weed.
Sojay Haze by Cresco, Sativa - A good morning Sativa, but it just makes my head a bit too foggy to rate it higher. Still can work reasonably on it. Great cherry flavor, without being overbearing. Still very nice for doing physical things.
GG#4, any grower, usually listed as Indica - Nobody can seem to screw this strain up, so I didn’t bother with a grower. Tastes like pine and glue chemicals. Very good for relaxation and pain relief, especially after a long day. Would be S tier, but makes my thinking a little too foggy. It is generally listed as an Indica, but it’s really closer to a Hybrid. If it weren’t for the mental fogginess, it would be great for hanging out with friends. As it stands, it’s still a very decent option for working out.
Julius Caesar by Cresco, Hybrid (only had cart) - Great strain for socializing. Nice, balanced, hybrid effects with a lot of pain relief. Taste is like dank weed, hard to describe. Seems somewhat difficult to get the flower, perhaps this strain will be promoted when I can finally grab some.
Special Ops by Gleaf, Hybrid - Effects are pretty good, but somewhat overwhelming if you have even a little too much. Taste and smell is like super dank weed, nothing really jumps out. Will put you to bed if you have too much, but you can still use it and hang out with your friends if you are careful with the dosage. Great for anxiety. I hear it was developed for use by veterans for PTSD, hence the name.
Headband by Illera, Sativa (only had distillate) - An old school classic, does exactly what it says it will. Makes my head a little too foggy to do the work I want though. Still great for physical activity outdoors, especially with friends.
Lime Skunk by Cresco, Sativa (only had cart + concentrate) - Amazing taste, and nice, mellow effects. Still gives that sativa energy, but it’s more hybrid-y. I would rate it higher, but I use sativas to try to get work done, and this one feels more like something you’d go for to hang out with your friends. For my money, there are better hybrids for that. Still a very good buy.
Chem de la Chem #5 by Prime Wellness (baseball glove pheno), Indica - Great for going to sleep. Tastes like a baseball glove smells. The only real drawback is it really gives me cottonmouth and dry eyes bad enough to smack it down to A tier, otherwise it could be S or SS.
Purple Haze #44 by Prime Wellness (cotten candy pheno) (only had concentrate), Sativa - has a pleasant floral taste. Old school goodness, mellow high comparable to Lime Skunk. Good for socializing, not so much for work.
Lime Sorbet by Cresco, Indica - This would be an S tier but for the Cresco reserve price point. Great body high, super relaxing, still has decent cerebral effects. Some people reported having problems with the flower, but my buds all looked and smelled amazing. Tastes pretty much as advertised, lime and earth and sweet. Great evening/night time strain to chill and watch some TV before bed.
Green Crack by Gleaf, Sativa - More of a hybrid really. Has a nice mango flavor, very mellow effects while still granting energy. I like to use it before physical outdoor activity, or workouts at the gym. That seems to be its niche. Not very good for work, but not the worst so you can still use it for that in a pinch.
Sour Tangie by Terrapin (only had concentrate) - Clear headed energy, but not enough pain relief to put it into S or SS. Tastes like citrus mixed with fuel. I can use it for work, but it’s no Moonshine Haze. Probably a lot better if you don’t have pain issues.
B Tier: Good weed, perfectly serviceable but not amazing.
Pineapple Express by Cresco, Hybrid (only had concentrate) - This one was kind of a disappointment for me, as I am a fan of both the movie and pineapple as a flavor. Didn’t really taste like pineapples, more like pine without the apple so much. The effects are still nice, though somewhat muted, and it makes it kind of hard to think. Nice for mellowing out on the weekend, but not much else.
Sundae Driver by Gleaf, Hybrid - I got some seeds in this one, so maybe this would rank higher if it had been a good batch. It’s nice for mellowing out, but makes you a little too sleepy. Probably still decent if you were having a lazy Sunday by yourself watching Youtube or something. Prepare to take frequent naps if that is the case. If you think you want to use it for sleep, don’t. There are better strains for that. The only other note I have is that it does seem to get my libido going, so it might be a better buy if you have a partner to chill with.
Outer Space by Cresco, Sativa - Tastes and smells great, like a strange and delicious combination of pine and citrus, but runs a bit too anxious for me. Also gives me the munchies to the point of distraction, which you may want. It still does a lot of what it’s supposed to though, you just have to be careful.
Grapefruit Durban by Terrapin, Sativa - Absolutely delicious grapefruit flavor, but the effects are nothing to write home about. Still a pretty decent option for a sativa.
Devils Lemons by Terrapin, Hybrid - Leans Indica. Pleasant lemon flavor. Effects are nice, but other hybrids do the hybrid game better, and other indicas do the indica game better so I couldn’t recommend it as a staple.
Orange Cookies by Gleaf, Hybrid - It’s got a nice orange flavor, but mostly it makes you sleepy. There are better strains for that. It has nice enough effects to put it into B, however.
C Tier: Okay in a pinch, but probably only buy if it’s on sale or you don’t have other options.
Lemon Sweet Skunk by Terrapin, Sativa - The taste is nice, but the effects just aren’t there for my money. It still does some of what it’s supposed to though, so it’s not a total bust.
Purple Thai #22 by Prime Wellness (Caramel Apple pheno) (only had concentrate), “Sativa” - Do not listen to the box’s lies, the concentrate that I purchased has 8% myrcene and it will knock you the heck out if you dare to eat any food at all, and boy are you going to want to eat some food. Tastes fine, and it does help with sleep, but for my money there are much better strains out there.
Trainwreck by Whole Plants, Hybrid - Starts off like a sativa, ends up like an indica. Maybe that’s what some people want, but not me. Still kind of fun for the novelty of it, I suppose. Mine also had seeds in it, so maybe it can be better. Taste is kind of peppery, but not particularly good peppery like African Thai or Golden Goat, more like weed with some pepper notes.
THC Bomb by Whole Plants, Hybrid - tastes a bit fruity, but only a bit. Mostly tastes like weed. Effects are pretty meh, but still has some nice pain relief. Okay for chilling. Too much makes you sleepy. Advertised as having the potential for a super high THCA percentage, but mine was just about at 20% which was well below what it can be grown at according to Whole Plant’s website, so this might have just been a bad batch.
D Tier: Medical grade weed that will still blow most street weed out of the water, but not really worth a buy when there are so many better options.
Hash Haze by Terrapin, Indica - I dunno, I guess it will make you sleepy if you have enough, but don’t expect much else. Taste is kind of like bad weed you might get on some poorly lit street corner, effects are lackluster. I might have just gotten a bad batch, other patient friends had a somewhat higher opinion of this strain, but no one described it as amazing or even great.
Rando Calrission by Terrapin, Hybrid - I mean, it’s weed. Taste is like a nicer Hash Haze. Effects are meh. Certainly better than nothing, but there are so many better options. One of my patient buddies liked it a lot better than me, so your mileage may vary.
Ice Cream Cake by Terrapin, Indica - sorry, the effects just aren’t there for me, just a boring dull high. Has a sweet and earthy flavor. I’d of course rather have it than no weed at all. Was disappointed because I had heard so many good things about this strain. Perhaps I got a bad batch? Mine was very stemmy.
Crockett’s Dawg by Standard Farms, Hybrid - taste is fruity and pretty nice, but that’s the best I have to say about it. Effects are very meh. Again, better than no weed, but it’s strong enough to make me not able to work without really giving effects that I want, so I’m reaching for something else.

Queue Jojo's "Too Little, Too Late": My Deconstructing Eden Pronouns Collection Review + The Ecstacy and Sagittarius

Now, the Pronouns collection is no longer in season so like.....yes, this may be too little too late! But I've recently had some much-needed free time so I'm going through the gobs upon gobs of scents I've acquired in the past several months and creating a "reviews" spreadsheet for my own personal use. This collection (+ The Ecstacy and Sagitarrius) is the first up of my scents I'll be reviewing -- hopefully, I can review the others before they also go out of stock lol.

PRONOUNS COLLECTION
Overall, I really like this collection. It was the first sample scents I'd ever bought, so maybe my heart is attached to them a tiny bit. But, whether it be an emotional attachment or their innate quality, I keep coming back to them either way! Here they are from most to least favs:
Them (Pillowy lavender, soft amber, juniper, black cedar, tonka bean): I looooove this scent. I describe a lot of things as "warm and cozy" but this to me is the pinnacle. The tonka bean and amber are the forward notes. The lavender comes on towards the end and is topped off by the smallest hint of cedar. I normally don't even like lavender that much because it can come off as too "aromatherapy" and not wearable enough for me, if that makes sense? But the lavender in this is-- I wouldn't necessarily-- well hidden, but just.... so well blended with the other notes. And it easily wears for 6+ hours! My best, one sentence lay-nose description: warm sugar cookies with lavender bulbs sprinkled on top 10+/10
He (Sea salt, marine notes, bergamot, cedar, rosewood): I really enjoy this one. It's a very clean scent. It smells a lot like fresh linen mixed with saltwater. I pick up on the cedar and rosewood too -- though I can't say that I would necessarily pick up on them without having read the description. The bergamot isn't very present in my nose. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: doing laundry on the coast of the PNW. 8/10
Him (Oud, Bergamot, Mahogany, Cedar, Oakwood, Animalic musk): Ah, now I finally understand what oud smells like -- and I really like it! To me, this one smells like your run of the mill musky men's cologne. Nothing mind-blowing but not bad by any means. I *think* the oud is the most stand out character here, though it'd be hard for me to tell because this is the only oud scent I have. I also *think* I pick up on the spiciness of the bergamot too. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: a department store cologne that evokes sand and spice 7/10
She (Spun sugar, clean white sheets, pink peonies, delicate white lilacs, and sweet carnations): This I think is the sweet version of "he" -- a nice fresh linen scent but with beautiful, light florals and sugar. Also a pretty commercial smelling, "grown-up" scent, but again, that's not a bad thing. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: picking fresh flowers while wearing pink tweed 7/10
Her (Deep rose, mahogany, rich amber, a drop of patchouli, and oud): Let me preface this by saying I'm ok with rose scents, but like... fresh(er) roses. This, on the other hand, is such a strong overpowering, sweet rose that I can't handle it. I can pick up on the amber as well, but the rose is just too strong, bleh. I see how this could be nice if you like deep rose scents but it's just not for me. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: bunches and bunches of rose petals soaked in honey and baby powder 4/10
They (Basil, Neroli, Green pear, Bay leaf, Oakmoss, Sage): Yeah I'm not fond of this one. I don't mind pear scents but this is VERY peary, to the point where I'm really straining to pick up on any of the other notes. And for some reason, it pulls like straight sunscreen on me? Either way, not a fan. Gets some points for not being a completely off-putting scent, though. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: nothing but pears and sunscreen 3/10

TWO MORE DECONSTRUCTING EDEN SCENTS:
The Ecstacy (Plumeria, vanilla buttercream, delicate white woods, and, clean skin musk): God I love this scent so much. I wear it most days. I absolutely love plumeria scents, and this is a beautiful plumeria that's almost mixed with bubblegum? Or something like it? But not in an overly sweet way because it's definitely floral forward (but I also wouldn't describe it as an overtly "floral" scent either). And you can pick up faintly on the endnote hit of woods scent. Just truly a beautiful, unexpected combination. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: smelling plumerias while chewing on some dubble bubble in the woods (wild, I know) 10+/10
Sagittarius (Somalian and Indian frankincense CO2, myrrh, sandalwood, benzoin, tonka bean butter, balsam of Peru and soft fir balsam absolute and just a bit of spice): Very heavy frankincense scent with noticeable sweetness towards the end. The sweetness wasn't discernibly vanilla at first but after a few whiffs to be like "oh yeah I see it now." After a few hours the power of the frankincense tamps down and the vanilla shines through. It's really sultry and powerful. Wears kind of alcoholic, which I'm not super fond of. My best, one sentence lay-nose description: a power suit worn at a corporate job, that at night is taken off in a room full of incense smoke, pine cones, and a single vanilla candle 7/10

The Maiden Shrine

The Maiden Festival (Part 2) https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/comments/imggf0/the_maiden_festival_part_2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb
Tradition dictates that girls who passed away before being married, were not to be placed into their familial shrine after death.
In exchange, they were most often placed into Maiden Shrines in order to receive offerings and appease their spirits.
People believed that Maiden Shrines had the power to watch over young children, unite lovers, cure diseases and even bestow financial rewards.
Not the one in the Village, though.
It sure used to be just like any maiden shrine.
When I was in elementary school, I was sent to live with my grandparents during long vacations. My grandmother's sister who died in infantry is also in the shrine and I often accompanied my grandmother to visit her. My grandmother would bring her rice cookies and ask her to keep me healthy.
The shrine is situated on the very edge of the village, an unassuming pavilion under a great tree, marking the start of the footpath that leads deep into the ancient forest that surrounds the village on three sides.
The pavilion had a concrete foundation that supported a wooden frame that was once painted a vivid red, now peeling and stained dark brown from years of burning incense. Wooden lattice doors added in later years shielded the inside from peering eyes.
Inside the pavilion, red lights hanging from the columns bathed the names of the resting maidens. In the middle was a wooden table covered with offerings. Near the main opening, a single stone carved incense burner stood on three legs, littered with sticks of incense burning at different degrees.
The villagers lived off the forest. The forest provided valuable timber, herbs and fungi. All main sources of income for the village. A single felled ancient tree could sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars and were carefully documented and regulated by the village council. All those entering the forest would bring offerings and incense and pray for a safe trip at the Maiden Shrine before continuing on their businesses.
While my grandmother prayed and tidied up the Maiden Shrine, I would amuse myself outside. The great tree that towered over the shrine was the nearest thousand-year-tree from the village and the villagers tied a thick straw string around the base. On the string was a hollow bell as big as a mans fist, it was said that if the bell should ring, ill fortune would befall the village.
The tree itself was a kind of cypress tree, if I recall correctly. The fallen twigs gave off a distinct odor when snapped and I often gathered them to bring home to my grandfather. The odor and wood of the great tree was thought to be pure and could ward off bad luck. My grandfather would dry the twigs and then crush the wood into a power to let me bring home in a embroidered bag my grandmother made me.
These visits to the village and the shrine were always peaceful and recalled with fondness.
When I was a teenager, the great tree burned down, taking the Maiden Shrine with it. We received a call from my deeply distressed grandmother and hurriedly made the 5 hour drive back to the village with my parents.
What met us was the sight of the blackened concrete foundation and the charred remains of the once great tree. Apparently a lightening bolt struck the tree and the burning debris ignited the surrounding area. It was only through sheer luck that the flames had not reached the forest nor the village. I overheard my mother trying to console my still sobbing grandmother that it was most likely the Maiden Shrine and great tree sacrificed themselves for the village.
As my grandparents home was very close to the shrine, I could watch the villagers moving about the wreckage from the house. My father and grandfather deep in conversation with the other village elders, most likely contemplating the next step.
Perhaps the surreal view of the ruined shrine and the absence of the great tree made me uncomfortable, but I felt that the villagers were also hiding a sense of unease. It was then that I realized that the house across from my grandparents house was in mourning. In a village with such an elderly population, it was not an uncommon sight. However, the sight of the white ribbons sent shivers down my back.
On the second floor window of the house in mourning, I saw a familiar face. It was one of the few younger people still living in the village who I was in very good terms with. As the only teacher in the village, I had often spent my afternoons pouring over my homework with this soft spoken teacher in her mid twenties. She caught my gaze and solemnly beckoned me over with a stiff movement of her hand, her white sleeve falling down as she did so.
I gave my mother a quick notice and ran out the door, missing the uptake my grandmother gave. The house was still open to mourners and I made my way inside easily. I quickly went past the parlor that was doubling as the mourning hall, averting my eyes as I went by, though the fleeting glance told me the casket was already gone, leaving a lone picture nestled in flowers. I went up the stairs and stopped in front of the closed door to the bedroom of my beloved teacher.
I was confused to find that the door was locked and I knocked softly to be let in. After a pause, the door clicked open and I could see a flutter of movement in the gap between the door and the floor.
I pushed open the door only to face an empty room.
As I stood there in bewilderment, I heard footsteps climbing up the stairs behind me. I looked back and met the concerned gaze of my teachers elderly father. He frowned at the sight of the open door and said to me, "You shouldn't be here, child." He stepped forward and motioned for me to follow him. As he reached out to close the door, the door slammed shut without a warning.
We both stood there stunned, after a moment, he grabbed my shoulder and roughly pulled me downstairs. I looked back on a whim as we went down the stairs and to my surprise, I saw the slightest shadow moving in the gap between the door and the floor, as if someone was walking towards the door. Then, I heard the unmistakable click of the door locking as the second floor landing slid out of view.
Downstairs, my parents and grandparents were waiting for me in the mourning hall. My grandmother ran to me and pulled me into a tight hug. She was wailing something incomprehensible while my grandfather and father exchanged concerned looks. However, all of my attention was on the picture on the wall. There she was, slightly smiling, was my young teacher.
My father broke me and my grandmother apart and asked me what I was doing there. There was an undeniable sense of urgency in his tone and I stammered that I thought I saw my teacher call to me.
A deadly silence met my words and I was rushed back to my grandparents house. They took me to a room and sat me down with a plate of snacks and gave me no uncertain orders to stay there. Before they closed the door, my grandmother pressed a bag of cypress wood dust into my hands. The walls were thin, thankfully, and I listened carefully to what they were saying.
"---saw her!" That was my hysterical grandmother, I believe.
"Should have burned----" Grandfather said gruffly.
"Thats MY daughter--------the bastard-------!" The teacher's father.
As I listened, I felt my heart sinking. My sweet, soft spoken teacher had been found broken and bleeding at the Maiden Shrine a week ago. Though she was rushed to the hospital, she had not been able to keep her baby. No one knew she had been seeing anyone, let alone pregnant. The pregnancy was thankfully in the early stages and she was declared to be well enough to be discharged 2 days later.
No one knew what happened to her in the forest and as the villagers scurried around to help, she hanged herself during the night in her room.
Her family was allowed to keep her for three days until the villagers forced them to burn the body and dispose of the ashes.
The villagers believed that the hanged were the most dangerous of deceased. And all that came into contact needed to be cleansed. Be it the house they hanged, the people that went into the house during mourning, people that came into contact with the mourners, all needed to be cleansed with the ash of the cypress tree and wine. The Body and the rope and in certain cases even the clothes belonging to the deceased needed to be burned and the ashes scattered deep in the forest.
Her father and mother vehemently protested and the villagers compromised to bury her ashes near the Maiden Shrine, on the outskirts of the village.
The night she was interred, a lightening stroke the great tree and burned down the Maiden Shrine.
It also seemed that I was not the only one to have seen her after her untimely death.
A village meeting was held that very night, deciding that my father should be the one to go to the highly regarded Buddhist temple for help, taking me and the others that had seen her along to seek refuge at the temple. We would leave at the break of dawn.
That night, after a very strained dinner, I was led to the family shrine and told to stay there for the night. Grandmother prepared a bed for me with extra blankets so that I would be more comfortable. Grandfather gave me a bucket and told me to use it if I needed the bathroom. Once again, under no circumstances were I to leave the room. And it was promised that no one would come to me before dawn. The doors and windows were all closed securely, but left unlocked. A trail of cypress wood powder circled my bed.
I still clutched my embroidered bag for reassurance as I huddled under the covers. The scent of the cypress wood did not offer the usual comfort. I shuddered violently despite the summer temperature. My grandparents had taken away my phone and I couldn't tell the time. As I finally began to fall asleep despite my unfounded terror, I heard my mother calling for me outside the door.
"Dear, are you all right in there?" My mother asked softly.
I felt my throat closing and I held my embroidered bag tightly. The scent of cypress was all of a sudden overwhelming. My mother continued to say, "Its alright if you want to come out, your grandparents don't need to know, you know how superstitious they are..........."
My mother continued to call to me despite me not answering. It was odd, somehow, my mother's voice. Seemingly distorted, as if spoken during high winds. I pulled my blankets over my head and bit my arm to keep myself from crying out in terror. After what seemed like an eternity, the door was pulled open and I could see my grandfather standing in the light of the dawn.
My grandfather was grim when he helped me to my feet. I had clutched the bag so hard that the powder had escaped from the bag and I was covered in the cypress dust.
As I walked out of the room, I realized that the trail of cypress dust had turned to ashes.
My mother had not come for me during the night.
Outside my grandparents house, a van was waiting outside. Along with three other young men around the age of 20. They did not make eye contact with me. As we all sat silently in the van, I could tell that the van too was dusted with cypress dust.
The van pulled out of the driveway and onto the only road leading out of the village. I looked back, and next to the burnt tree stump, my young teacher stood watching in her white burial dress, her gaze full of fury. I blinked and she was gone. The thick straw sting around the once great tree snapped, and the hollow bell gave an abrupt ring before it clanged to the ground.
The ride was thankfully uneventful and we made it safely to the temple. Once there, the monks prayed over us as my father went to meet with the Master of the temple.
The continuous prayer made me dizzy with sleep as the comfort of the temple calmed my anxiety. It seemed to not be the case for my companions. All three of the young men were rocking back and forwards to the rhythm of the chanting, with clear drops of sweat lining their faces. All had their eyes tightly closed and I could see even the monks were concerned at their states.
It was at this moment that Master came walking to this room with my father at his heels. The Master frowned and moved forward with a speed uncanny for his age. He grasped the wrist of one of the men and scowled at the scratches that peppered the young man's arm, as if the young man had lost the fight with a cat. Even more frightening, however, was the ring of purple bruises around the young mans wrist. As if someone had grasped him tightly. The Master looked him over and the Master's brow furrowed even more.
All along the young man's neck, was a bruise forming in front of our eyes. As if someone had their hands around his neck and was squeezing down this very moment. A dark red bruise that seemed to be bleeding. But the young man seemed to not have noticed anything. The same bruises could be seen on the other two young man.
My father worriedly checked me for any bruises and we were both relieved to find none.
The Master spoke to us, "Her matter does not yet concern you."
The Master gave me a talisman to be worn around my wrist and ordered my father to take me far away from the village.
My mother met us near the opening of the village and we watched the monks march the three young men into the village. My grandparents waved goodbye to us as we drove away. All the villagers came out to follow the monks to the ruins of the Maiden Shrine.
That was the last time I ever set foot into the village.
I was plagued with horrible dreams for weeks to come. Dreams that, in my opinion, showed what happened in the village after we left.
With the three young men subdued and kneeling before the grave of the young teacher, the monks began their prayers. In my dreams, the young teacher would glare at the young men with blood tears flowing from her eyes. Her blackened hands would try to wrap around their necks even as the monks chanted prayers in futile attempts to appease her spirit. The Master would fling his instrument at her to make her retreat when the young men seem to turn blue from suffocation.
With each dream the young men seemed to wilt, as if their life force was slowly drained away. My beloved teacher would look less like the person she used to be and more like a withered demon as her limbs shriveled and blackened. Her face contorted with hatred.
In the last dream, a black twisted horn erupted from her left temple and she snapped one of the young man's neck. The Master coughed blood as his instrument shattered and the monks ordered the villagers to flee the village.
I could only watch in in horror, frozen and unable to wake up, as the demon tore apart the limbs of the remaining young men, reveling in the pain and agony and terror of the dying men. As she moved towards the village, I could feel her gaze fix on my face. Her face split into a twisted smile as she raised a blackened hand toward me, with nails like claws. I felt a searing pain around my wrist and I screamed in agony.
The Master took advantage of her lapse and regained his stance. His disciples forming a ward around the demon and their Master. The Master, with his hands shaking, used his own blood to create a ward and sealed the demon inside a fractured piece of her skull.
The monks rebuilt the Maiden Shrine deeper into the forest and interred her inside the shrine. Hoping that the ancient cypress trees will form a powerful ward to seal the demon inside the forest and their cleansing abilities would soothe her fury and hatred. The villagers held annual rituals to chant prayers to her and the monks paid her weekly visits.
Since then, only one name resides in the Maiden Shrine, and the villagers dare not utter her name. For years, the village remained at peace, but I still dare not set foot in the village, for my wrist burns each time I think about paying the village a visit.
My grandparents had long since passed away and I have never had the need to go back. I have now moved further away and feel myself safe.
However, my parents have been sending worrying news about the village lately. News about developing the picturesque ancient forest.
They are clearing out the cypress trees callously, my father says.
As of today, my wrist is burning as the bruise seems to bleed dark red.
